into consideration their needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:
As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing
them to manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to
encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
The hand is one of the most symbolized parts of the human body. It is often
used to depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn,
create and accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that
you as a learner is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant
competencies and skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies
in your own hands!
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time.
You will be enabled to process the contents of the learning resource while being
an active learner.
This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:
1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of
the module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer What I Know before moving on to the other
activities included in the module.
3. Read the instruction carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your
answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with
it.
If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do not
hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator. Always bear in mind that you
are not alone.
We hope that through this material, you will experience meaningful learning
and gain deep understanding of the relevant competencies. You can do it!
Lesson
Use Tools, Equipment and
1 Paraphernalia
Hello there! Did you enjoy your previous lesson on how to classify tools,
equipment and paraphernalia according to its type and functions? This time,
you will be guided on how to use these tools, equipment and paraphernalia
based on their task requirement.
Have you tried holding a clinical thermometer at home? What part of the
body do you usually insert it?
In this module, you will also know how to use these tools, equipment and
paraphernalia to make your work easier.
What I Know
Before you start your lesson, have you tried ironing your own school
uniforms? What do you usually consider before ironing some clothes?
Below are some questions to determine how far did you learn about the
specified task requirement of the different tools, equipment and paraphernalia
used in caregiving. Read each item carefully and encircle the letter of the best
answer. Goodluck!
1. Which of the following thermometers is inserted into the mouth under the
tongue, under the armpit or into the anus?
a. digital thermometer c. ear digital thermometer
b. clinical thermometer d. infrared thermometer with laser
pointer
2. You have checked the temperature of your mother. What are you going to do
after using the thermometer?
a. Wash it with tap water. c. Disinfect it using an alcohol.
b. Wipe it with a clean cloth. d. Place it in the container after using.
3. Which of the following is the BEST way to check the body temperature?
a. Use a clinical thermometer. c. Check if there is face redness.
b. Place your hand on the forehead. d. Observe the color of your urine.
4. Which of the following forces the blood to push against the walls of the
blood vessels?
a. arterial pressure c. blood pressure
b. capillary pressure d. venous pressure
6. What do we call the balance between heat produced and heat lost in the
body?
a. pulse rate c. blood pressure
b. respiratory rate d. body temperature
7. Which type of thermometer uses mercury and is considered unsafe to use?
a. ear thermometer c. infrared thermometer
b. digital thermometer d. clinical thermometer
10. You are asked to iron some fabrics at home. Which of the following will you
consider before ironing some fabrics that need special care?
a. labels of the garments c. pants’ waistbands
b. pleats and pockets of skirts d. collars and sleeves of shirts
How are you so far? Did you enjoy the activity? Now, take the next
challenge! Analyze the following statements, write True if the statement is
correct and False if it is wrong. Write your answer on the space provided before
each number.
What’s In
I’m sure that in your homes there are tools, equipment and
paraphernalia that you usually use. We use different tools in different
situations. Preparing meals, cleaning and ironing clothes, and taking vital
signs are activities in caregiving. Can you identify at least two (2) tools,
equipment and paraphernalia used in caregiving and its task requirement.
TOOLS TASK REQUIREMENT

What’s New
How are you coping with our lesson? I hope you are excited about the
activities that we will discuss in this module. Study the situations that follow
and do the tasks that are asked in each situation.
Activity 1. Let us Sterilize!
“Mrs. Hazel gave birth to a healthy baby girl and her husband bought a
new feeding bottle sterilizer. However, they wanted to know the purpose
and the proper way of using the sterilizer.
What Is It
Now, that you have successfully identified the different tools, equipment
and paraphernalia used in caregiving, it is important that you should know how
to use them.
Enjoy reading the information below, then find out how much you can
remember the uses of equipment, tools and paraphernalia based on the task
requirement.
Are you discovering more! The next will be the most useful
eequipment and paraphernalia for checking your patient or client’s Vital Signs.
When caring for an infant, toddler, child, elderly or person with special
needs, measuring the vital signs should be taken with proper care. This module
will lead you to the basic knowledge of taking vital signs. As you learn the
different processes, you will also perform taking vital signs.
But first, let us talk about vital signs. Vital signs are bodily functions
that reflect the body’s state of health and are easily measurable. These are body
temperature, pulse rate, respiratory rate, and blood pressure. In some
cases, the pain that a person experiences is considered to be the fifth vital sign.
Have you seen doctors and nurses wearing their stethoscopes? Do you
like to be one of them in the future?
1. Thermometer
3. BP Apparatus
Before taking the Blood Pressure of the patient always wash hands and
prepare the equipment you will use.
1. Introduce yourself and let the patient or client know the procedure to be
done.
2. Sanitize the earpieces of the stethoscope with an antiseptic pad.
3. Ask your client to rest quietly. Have him/her lie down or sit on a chair
whichever is more comfortable for him/her.
4. If you are using a mercurial apparatus, the measuring scale should be
within the level of your eyes.
5. Expose the arm of your client by rolling the sleeves up. Have your
client’s arm from the elbow down to rest fully extended on the bed or the
arm of a chair.
6. Unroll the cuff, loosen the screw and squeeze the cuff with your hands to
remove air completely.
7. Wrap the cuff around your client’s arm above the elbow, not too tight or
too loose.
8. Find your client’s brachial pulse at the inside of the elbow. Hold the
diaphragm there and inflate the cuff until the pulse disappears. Take
note of the reading and immediately deflate the cuff. This is the client’s
approximate systolic reading and is called the palpated systolic pressure.
9. Place the stethoscope’s earpieces into your ears and place the diaphragm
on the brachial pulse.
10.Turn the screw to close it. Inflate the cuff until the dial points to 30 mm
above the palpated systolic pressure.
11.Turn the screw to open it. Let the air escape slowly until the sound of
the pulse comes back. Take note of the calibration that the pointer
passes as you hear the first sound. This indicates the systolic pressure.
12.You have to continue releasing the air from the cuff. When you hear the
sounds change to something softer and faster and disappear, take note of
the calibration. This is now the diastolic pressure
13.Deflate the cuff complete. Remove it from the arm of your client and
record the reading on the client’s chart.
14.Wipe the earpieces of the stethoscope with cotton and alcohol and place
the equipment back to their proper place and wash your hands.
Direction: In the space provided, write TRUE if the statement is correct. But if
it is FALSE, underline the word that makes it wrong and write the
correct answer before the number.
