Leinard: Sports officiating, what exactly is sports officiating? It is a
system of managing a sports, specifically on implementing the game
rules and keeping order in the duration of the game Officiate sporting
events, games, and competitions. Judge performances in sporting
competitions to determine a winner. Inspect sports equipment and
examine all participants to ensure safety. Keep track of event times,
starting or stopping play when necessary. The official fulfills various
functions and duties, depending on the sport and the nature of the
competition. For instance, he may referee the competition on a field in
soccer, on a court in basketball or handball, on a rink in hockey, in a ring
in boxing, on a mat in wrestling, or from a tower in volleyball or tennis.
In running, walking, and ski races, the official may act as a starter,
course judge, or finish judge.

Mark: Here are the qualities of a great sports official:

 Physical quality (Mark)
 Emotional quality (Gian)
 Mental quality (Kerwin)
 Social quality (Andrew)

Physical qualities, the official must be physically healthy to officiate the

game. He/she needs to be physically fit so he/she can catch up to every
point of the game. Because he cannot call a timeout when he's tired or
exhausted. So physical preparation is a crucial factor in officiating the
game. Therefore officials need to maintain high level of fitness. Some of
the ways to determine one's fitness are the basis in improving BMI,
personal maximal heart rate and training heart rate, exercise program,
and nutritional management program.

Gian: Emotional Qualities, an official also needs to be emotionally

stable. He/she needs to be ready when officiating. Because readiness is a
crucial factor in officiating so he/she can be focused in the game
especially in the crucial and end game. Whatever problems comes
toward him/her officials must always officiate the game according to the
rules. He/she should not be affected by the emotions of the game. With
continuous practice through practice games, immersions, and
observations. His/her confidence will fully develop.

Kerwin: Mental qualities, as with the two qualities earlier this quality
is just as important. Mental qualities are important to make the game
stable. The official must make mental preparations so he/she can handle
the pressure of the game. The official must be mentally tough to perform
good quality officiating, knowledge on the rules of the game, alertness,
decisive, and honest judgement. The result of this will lead to the
satisfaction of both teams, and audience in accepting the judgement.

Andrew: social qualities, is also as important as the first three, it

involves the dealing with others in any given situation. Complaints will
most likely come from both competing teams. The officiator can settle
disputes even without sacrificing his integrity of a game and the
officiating crew. Surrounding with people who help and mentoring from
a senior official can could help develop his/her decision making skills in
any given situation according to the rules of the game. So you can
control what happens in the game but still you have to always be fair all
the time so you and your officiating skills won't have any complaints
from both side of the teams
