Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

1.1Background of the study

Cafes started as places for information exchange, and have always been

used as places to read the paper, and send postcards home, play traditional or

electronic games, chat to friends, find out local information. Users of Internet

cafes face serious challenges when it comes to information security in internet

cafes. The Internet cafes owners usually fail to cover all angles of information

security, and in this way they breach the trust of their customers. Although

they increase the freedom of customers to use the internet, they don’t improve

their computer security to protect customer information from hackers and

malicious damage.

Therefore, most of Internet Café in Asia began to develop prepaid system.

Customer could prepay for 1 hours, 3 hours, 4 hours, 8 hours, and even 12

hours with certain discount price. Though customer could always change their

ideas to extend the time (usually not shorten), at least the duration is

comparatively predictable. Some Internet Café would charge you by time (as

the video above to introduce Japanese internet cafe), or by weekday or

weekend.

According to previous studies conducted by the commission on

information and communication technology the Philippines has one of the

lowest computer penetration rates in Asia. Compared to its neighboring

country, only 14% of the total population in the Philippines has a computer at

home. What is fascinating about the Yahoo-Nielsen report is that they found

out that 28 percent of Filipinos in national urban centers access the internet in

the given month and 5 percent access it on a daily basis. You would have to

remember is that the poll that they conducted took only 1,200 samples in 22

highly urbanized areas including Metro Manila. If you would add those

belonging to the provinces the number of Filipinos accessing the internet would

surely be greater. Another interesting face is that they found out that there is a

growing demand for internet access outside of Metro Manila in fact 35% of

Filipinos in Cagayan De Oro access the internet in the given time.

Iligan City to inspect business permits of internet shops Publishes June

1, 2010 2:09pm. Internet shops in Iligan City will soon be checked to see if

these have previously secured proper business permits, an order from the

mayor’s office said. The move stemmed from reports indicating that students

have skipped class and instead have spent their time in internet shops, a dzXL

radio report said on Tuesday, quoting Former City Councilor Bayani Areola

said. Areola, who chairs the city committee on moral recovery, added many of

the students even spend their time online to view pornographic images – during

class hours.

1.2 Review of Related Literature

Internet café, or cyber cafes, are places that have computer available,

usually for a fee, that you can use to go online. Internet cafes can be set up in

actual eating/drinking establishments, or other types of locations. Besides

using the computer workstation, you may also be able to print or scan

documents, depending on the Internet café.

Internet cafes are particularly useful for traveling, as they’re pretty

common in many countries, you don’t have to have a computer with you ( as

opposed to using wi-fi hotspot ), and using an internet café.

KNOWING THE INTERNET USAGE OF CAFÉ CUSTOMERS

A total of twenty-eight (28%) percent of the estimated 35 million of

Filipinos in urban centers nationwide or 9.8 million Filipinos are regular

internet users with five (5%) percent of them or 490,000 saying they access the

Internet every day. Thirty-four (34%) of the internet users in the country

belonging mostly to socio-economic class A, B and C have their own computers

but only twenty-seven (27%) percent or 2.646 million have Internet access in

their homes. The survey showed the lack of a PC or Internet access at home is

no longer a hurdle for most Filipinos to access the Internet. The survey

revealed that Internet cafes have become an important access point for

Filipinos Internet users. Internet cafes have become the great equalizer for all

social classes in accessing the Internet. Forty-seven (47%) of All Internet time

by Filipino internet users are spent in cafes.
