American Period

Banaag at Sikat by Lope K. Santos, it is one of the first literary novels written by him in Tagalog
language in 1906. The pages of the story center around the lives of Delfin, his love for a rich
landlord's daughter, while Lope K. Santos also discusses societal themes like as socialism, capitalism,
and the works of the united associations of employees. Delfin and Felipe are two pals in the story.
Delfin is a socialist, whilst Felipe supports anarchist causes. Delfin, as a socialist, believes and aspires
to disseminate socialist concepts to the whole public, so that citizens have more say in all businesses,
properties, and other national activities. Despite the fact that he is poor, studies law, and works as a
newspaper writer, Delfin remains convinced that a society predisposed to the cause of the poor may
be attained through peaceful methods, rather than through violence.
After EDSA to the Present

The Conjugal Dictatorship of Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos by Primitivo Mijares, one of the most
critical books on the presidential pair, was released in the United States in 1976 in response to a
growing demand for uncensored information about the administration. Primitivo Mijares was a
Marcos propagandist and reporter for the government-backed ‘The Daily Express' before defecting
from the government. Mr. Mijares vanished months after the book was published, and copies of the
book were purportedly stolen from book stores across the United States. In the Philippines, the
publishing was outlawed.

Acitvity 3: Explore It!

Banaag at Sikat
Novel by Lope K. Santos

Insight 1: Banaag at Sikat was notable for its depiction

of issues such as socialism, capitalism, and the works of
the united association of laborers. As a book that was
considered as the "Bible of working-class Filipinos", the
pages of the novel revolve around the life of Delfin, his
love for a daughter of a rich landlord, while Lope K.
Santos also discusses the social issues such as socialism,
capitalism, and the works of the united associations of
laborers.

Insight 2: The work did not find readers too readily, and
Santos' printers hounded the author. Banaag at Sikat
surprisingly did not figure in the canonical list of novels
compiled by Virgilio S. Almario as recommended
reading for high school students. Almario did mention
that Lope K. Santos's novel was a pioneer of the so-called
novel of resistance (nobela ng pagtutol). Perhaps the very
monolithic structure of the novel, notorious for its
ideological concerns, and despite its romantic pretext,
was not easily appreciated by high school students but
rather by advanced readers.
The Conjugal Dictatorship of Ferdinand and
Imelda Marcos
Novel by Primitivo Mijares

Insight 1: This book should also be read by today’s

millennials and those born after the martial law years who
never got to experience the dark days under the dictatorship.
Some of these people are under the wrong impression that the
Marcos regime was the “golden age” of the Philippines—
another fanciful yarn spun by the dictator’s publicists and
blind supporters. We need to be reminded of the past to
ensure that the Marcoses are never allowed to return to
power, as they are trying to do now.

Insight 2: The book offers a behind-the-scenes look at the

personalities and circumstances involved in the creation
of one of the most corrupt and tyrannical dictatorships in
modern history. Unlike other books about the era, this
book was written by a true insider who took no steps to
"sugar-coat" the details, even those which resulted in his
self-incrimination.
