Mangyan is one of the indigenous Philippine ethnic, they are living on the Island of Mindoro,

southwest of the Island of Luzon here in the Philippines. Mangyan has its own tribal name,
language, and custom. In Mindoro, they were once the only inhabitants. Mangyan tribes are
divided into major tribes.
Mangyans live in a peaceful society as compared to the head-hunting tribes in North Luzon and
also the brave defiance warrior tribes of the south. Mangyans are mainly subsistence
agriculturalists, planting a range of sweet potatoes, upland rice, and taro. They additionally trap
small animals and wild pigs. Many that live in close contact with lowland Filipinos sell money
crops like bananas and ginger. The Mangyans show their relevance to the elders through
kissing of the hand or “mano”. Mangyans additionally value “pakikiramay” wherever they

Diyos”, pagmamagandang loob and pakikipagkapwatao. The IP groups within the Philippines,
Mangyan elders have great influence and authority. They’re given higher recognition and

government officials do. The community considers them as persons of vast experience, wisdom,
and knowledge.
Today, the Mangyans live secludedly in remote components of Mindoro but eventually come
