• What is Mentoring?
• The Biblical standard of godly mentoring is discipleship.
• It is different from the way the world sees “mentoring.”
• A disciple = a student, a learner
MENTORING IS NOT

• Activity-based
• Crisis-oriented
• Information-giving
WHY MAKE DISCIPLES?

• We are commanded to do so
- Matthew 28:19-20
• People are naturally influenced
- Matthew 5:13-16
- 1 Corinthians 15:33
• Jesus Himself did it

• Practices found in Scripture that promote


spiritual growth.
• 1 Timothy 4:7
• Discipline yourself for the purpose of
godliness. (NASB)

• Faith in Christ is not stagnant.
• Spiritual disciplines help point them to the
right direction in growing their faith.
WHY READ THE BIBLE

• Growing your faith is the growing in the


knowledge and understanding of the
object of your faith.
• The Bible is the source of our faith and
provides a window to know who this God
is
WARNINGS

• False promises and/or expectations.


• Distorted view of God.

I rejoiced greatly in the Lord that at last you renewed

your concern for me. Indeed, you were concerned, but


you had no opportunity to show it. I am not saying this

because I am in need, for I have learned to be content


whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in

need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned


the secret of being content in any and every situation,
whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in
want. I can do all this through him who gives me

strength.

HOW TO READ THE BIBLE – Example
23 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is
hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of
heaven. 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go
through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich
to enter the kingdom of God.”
25 When the disciples heard this, they were greatly

astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?”


26 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is

impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

PRINCIPLES
1. BE A DISCIPLE FIRST
Disciples make disciples
2. CLARIFY AIMS
• Have an agenda
• Know you purpose & direction
3. MAKE ACTION PLANS
• Make It Creative
• Examples:
✓ Journaling
✓ Text a Thought
✓ Use Social Media
4. INVEST IN
PERSONAL LIFE
• Ask questions
• Listen
5. PRAY FOR & WITH
Love for them is as important
“behind their back” as it is
when you are with them.
6. SHARE YOURSELF
• You are the example
• You lead
• You take the first step
7. CORRECT WITH LOVE
• Have an attitude of
encouragement
• Correcting knowledge vs.
correcting behavior
• Each individual is different
8. TAKE THEM ALONG
Let them see
9. EMPOWER
Let them do:
“Bring them here to me,” he said. And he directed the
people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves
and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave
thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the
disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.”
(Matt 14:18-19)
10. POINT TO JESUS
It’s about being a part of what God is
doing their lives, not gaining a following.

The next day John was there again with two of


his disciples. When he saw Jesus passing by, he
said, “Look, the Lamb of God!” When the two
disciples heard him say this, they followed
Jesus. (John 1:35-37)
