Executive Summary : This report provides an analysis and evaluation of the


current and prospective profitability, liquidity and financial stability of café
Hollywood and also the information system they are using to maintain it. Methods
of analysis include primary and secondarydata.  

The report finds that they are using various type of information system to maintain
their position in market. They use database system in computer, facebook page on
their company name, bkash account and others.

The report also investigates the fact that the analysis conducted has limitations.
Some of the limitations include:
They should include more technology based system through which they can give
especial offers to regular customers.They can also include online payment system
or payment through mobile.

As they did not share their personal data and hidden features so it has become
difficult for us to get their exact data and other financial improvement.

Body of the Report :

Brief Introduction of the Topic: In Bangladesh all restaurant utilize computerized


management information systems, which are designed to improve operating
efficiencies, provide restaurant and Support Center management with timely access
to financial and operating data and reduce administrative time and expense. With
the help of information systems, restaurants managers have the ability to query,
report and analyze this intelligent data on a daily, weekly, period, quarter and year-
to-date basis and beyond, on a company-wide, regional or individual restaurant
basis. Together, this enables to closely monitor sales, food and beverage costs and
labor and operating expenses at restaurants. Management in information system
also helps to forecast and find the upcoming loss or profit easily.

Cafe Hollywood, the very first Hollywood Thematic Restaurant in Bangladesh


offers all favorites with diverse menu at the reasonable price,is located in
banani.Its full location is 4th Floor, Point 11, House # 25, Rd No. 11,Banani,
Dhaka.It was established on 2012.
We choose this topic for our proposing study because we want to know the role of
management information system in the growing restaurant business.Through this
study we can find how MIS is helping to run a business easily and how restaurant
managers are running and managing the information system.This study will also
help us to plan future business and we can also acquire business knowledge based
on real life example.
1. Statement of the Problems
 We want to find out what type of information system the restaurant is
using?
 How they are managing the whole system?
 How MIS is playing an important role in the restaurant business?
 What are the problem they are facing to manage the restaurant?
 What type of improvement they want to bring in future?

2. Scope and Delimitation of the Study

We choose café Hollywood for our research and as it is nearby us so we


can collect our data from that organization. As we are collecting all the
data from the IT manager of café Hollywood so it is not possible to
collect their personal data information. More over as we are given some
time limitation so we can not do research on many other organization.
But within that time we will try to figure out the impact of MIS on
restaurant business.

3. Objectives of the Study

 General objective: One of the main objective is to find the role of MIS in
restaurant business and we also want to find out different type of MIS in
different business sector.

 Specific Objectives:

 We want to find out how café Hollywood managing there


accounting sector with the help of MIS.
 We want to how they are managing their data on daily or monthly or
yearly basis.
 We want to find out there problems they are facing in managing
their information,
 Our final objective from this study is to find the future vision or
new MIS the restaurant want to plan for future
Methodology:

We will collect our primary data café Hollywood through questionnaire and for
secondary data we will go through website and other reference. This methodology
will help to follow the process the authors have gone through to make this thesis
come true. This consists of choice of method, data collections, procedure and the
selections regarding the case company and the interview persons.

Choice of Method:

Method is the instrument used to test whether a theory is good or not. It is the
process by which data is gathered to generate a theory or used to test a theory.
There are different ways of conducting research. The main purpose of research
method is to gathering of coherent, verifiable information and, most importantly,
the timely reporting of that information. However any method we use will be based
on the systematic collection and analysis of data.

There are two different kinds of methods that can be used to write a thesis, such as
qualitative method and quantitative method. The most significant difference
between these two is to how figures and statistics are used. The purpose of using
the qualitative methods is to get an understanding of what is studied. On the other
hand, the purpose of using quantitative method is to gather data in order to be able
to measure and do statistical analysis.

The methodology that has been adopted to conduct the research, It basically
involves the selection of research questions, the conceptual framework that has to
be adopted, the selection of appropriate research method such as primary research,
secondary research etc.

Since the purpose of this research is to study café Hollywood’s information system
and why it is not successful in Bangladesh.

As we know there are two types of research methods using now a days, one is
Qualitative and other is Quantitative. We will follow the Qualitative approach in
our thesis report when we are going to collect the data and also analyzing it
for coming up to conclusion and recommendation
The motivation for using qualitative method comes from the observation that, if
there is one thing, which distinguishes humans from the natural world, it is our
ability to talk. Qualitative research methods are designed to help researchers
understand people and the social and cultural contexts within which they live.

Qualitative research involves the studied use and collection of a variety of


empirical materials case study, personal experience.

According to Yin, Qualitative research is the search for knowledge that is supposed
to investigate, interpret, and understanding the phenomena by the means of an
inside perspective. Qualitative methods are often related to case studies, where the
aim is to receive thorough information and thereby obtain a deep understanding of
the research problem.

Denzin and Lincoln define qualitative research: Qualitative research is multi-


method in focus, involving an interpretive, naturalistic approach to its subject
matter. This means that qualitative researchers study things in their natural settings,
attempting to make sense of or interpret phenomena in terms of the meanings
people bring to them. The goal of qualitative research is to discover patterns, which
emerge after close Observation, careful documentation, and thoughtful analysis of
the research topic.

In qualitative method, the empirical data collection can be approached in different


ways Yin. Depending on the character of research questions, to which extent the
researcher has control over behavioral events and to which degree the focus is on
contemporary events.

A case study is a comprehensive description and analysis of single situation. In


case studies the aim of the research is to seek conformity between the results and
the theory. Helps to identify other similar events to the result that can only be
generalized Yin. This study is designed to proceed through interview.

After analyzing of Kaplan and Maxwell, Yin and Denzin and Lincoln, we conclude
that our thesis would be a qualitative research. Because, here we focus on
investigate, interpret, and understanding the phenomena of the case company.
According to Yin, this is qualitative research. Our research is also designed to
proceed through the couple of interviews with company persons.

Data Collection:

A major strength of case study data collection is the opportunity to use many
different sources of evidence. The use of several sources of evidence means that
the researcher has the opportunity to obtain multiple measures of the same
phenomenon that adds validity to the scientific study

In order to take appointment for taking interview we sent mail request including
the subject area of our study and we got consent from them to take interview. Most
of the time of our interview session we talked with Head of IT and little bit with
General Manager (Marketing). We have also talked with some of our friends who
were doing work there and have good understanding about their activities. Actually
they have manages most of the talks. We have send questionnaire detailing.

Questions concerning our purpose both through e mail and through people
employed by us to reach the officials and in most cases through our friend, we
have ensured answer. In collecting data, we faced a great constraint as it was not
easy to collect data through formal e-mail there. We tried to collect data through
our own media. In many cases, officials did not disclose our asked question. Even
after that we tried to collect data to our possible extent. A detail of answer has been
attached. To implement strategy or to introduce as a project manager, data
collection plays an important role.

Procedure:

The data analysis is consisted of three synchronized activity flows:

Data reduction: The process of selecting, focusing, simplifying, abstracting and


transforming the data. The purpose is to organize the data so that the final
conclusion can be drawn and verified.
Data display: Taking the reduced data and displaying it in an organized
compressed way so that conclusions can be more easily drawn.

Verification: Deciding what things mean, noting regularities, patterns,


explanations, possible configurations, casual flows, and propositions.

The study could be done well in a qualitative approach. The source of data would
be the primary one, as very few data or information is available in a centralized
position for that sector of a developing country like Bangladesh. The collected
information could be structured in a way that explains the present state well. Some
of them would be selected randomly to assess the need of that class. Then an
analysis would be made to examine the practices of companies to address the need.
The method would also include interviews and field survey.

Selection of the case company:

Since a part of the purpose with this thesis is to MIS process. So, it was necessary
to concretize and study the process further within an actual company which is well
known and popular. The primary criterion was to that company must be located
and familiar. This criterion was set in order to be able to visit the case company in
person and do face to face interviews. In this case, café Hollywood is undoubtedly
best company for this thesis.

After a successful meeting with the IT head of café Hollywood, who ensured us to
give all the support we need for this thesis, we started our study process.
Selection of interviews: After establishing the contact with café Hollywood, the
selection of interview person started .The numbers of interviews were regarded to
be approximately two to three.

The first interview was scheduled with IT head of café Hollywood; he was
considered a must to interview by us. He is working at that branch over 3 years and
considered to have a good insight in the strategy process which was confirmed
during the interview.

Our second interview was held with the manager, working at café Hollywood from
the beginning and has an important role on the strategy development and especially
within the implementation process.

Before the interviews, we sent the questions by emails to the respondents. All
interviews were held at café Hollywood which is situated close to the central area
of Banani.

After the interview and data collection we found that café Hollywood use

database. Windows made a specific version to take the orders of customers and
provide them a multiple forms of payment. By implementing Windows XP in
many café Hollywood’s stores, they bring an open technology plat form which was

POS System in café Hollywood:

It's a very useful way to finish the order quickly with less error. Also it helps the
worker in front of the screen not to forget asking customer about everything for
example the size, number of sandwiches and if making the order take away or not.
Furthermore, it's all done by a system that can save everything for the manager to
check about the profits, loses or amount of order per day at the end of each month
or at the end of the year.

Transaction Processing Systems(TPS):

Most of an organization’s daily activities are recorded and processed by its


transaction processing system (TPS), which receives input data and converts
them into output information intended for various users. Input data are called
transactions events that affect a business.

 I think that café Hollywood are using the right information systems for
their companies for example by using the TPS it let the employees have
more time for their customers and it also help them by saving time with
applying this system , its faster and more accurate to enter any data.

 Transaction processing system also helps café Hollywood in keeping


track of their suppliers as it record relevant information about suppliers
such as supplier name, address, the quality of the items purchased and
finally the invoice amount. This helps in reducing the possible
complexity that the employees may face in physically keeping contacts
with all the suppliers and so eases process of ordering when in need.

 A financial transaction is an economic event, it affects the firm’s assets,


is reflected in its accounting statements, and is measured in monetary
terms. Sales of goods to customers, purchases of inventory from
suppliers, and salaries paid to employees are all financial transactions.
Everything else is a nonfinancial transaction. The marketing department,
for example, might add some demographic data to its customer database.
The information would be processed by the firm’s TPS, but it wouldn’t
be a financial transaction.

 “Transaction Processing System” illustrates a TPS in which the


transaction is a customer’s electronic payment of a bill. As you can see,
TPS output can consist not only of documents sent to outside parties (in
this case, notification of payment received), but also of information
circulated internally, as well as of information entered into the database
for updating.

Decision Support System(DSS):

By using the DSS it helps the company choose or make the right decisions based
on the quality of the data café Hollywood has used WiFi in their restaurants to
gather information about customer practice and lengths of stay and sales, i think
they were really brilliant with this idea with using this system they can easily know
how much the customers are staying and the more they stay which means they are
satisfied. And i think by using the MIS the managers of café Hollywood can easily
look for future oriented .

POS (point of sale) system:

Its computer software used in a touch screen that café Hollywood restaurants use
or handheld devices. This system helps café Hollywood to track the real time
transaction and used to speed the business process to ensure fast and accurate order
for example sending the order to kitchen screen and processing the credit card
payment and other process that must be accurate. Also, the cashier immediately
knows what payment is due and the kitchen knows the coming up orders and for
how long a customer waited.

In addition there are different departments that are responsible in generating the
reports regarding the MIS such as the financial department, purchasing department,
Human Resource department and sales and marketing department. The financial
department focuses on the different reports regarding accounts, debits and payroll;
the purchasing focuses on the orders and stock selection; the HR department
focuses on the reporting regarding the levels of staffing, absenteeism, skills as well
as shortage; and the sales and marketing produce the reports regarding the
turnover, sales ration and market intelligence. All of the said reports can help to
analyze the overall performance of the company that can help the decision-making
process.

Other interesting issues about Information System at café Hollywood:

1. First issue is to know who has access to the information system because it is
important to protect this system from potential competitors so it is better to
implement a more secure information system in the future that is more
difficult to hack into it, as there is a lot of company’s would want access to
the information’s of café Hollywood.

2. Second issue is to know where the data is coming from; if it is collected


from the customer, then the customer better be informed of this and they
should agree to give this information about themselves so it will mean more
accurate computations of this data.

3. Third issue is measurement errors, so in future it is better to implement


superior ways of presenting the information which the system provides and
better ways of applying this information to make more money.

4. Fourth issue is to teach or train the employees who have access to café
Hollywood information system, how to use that information system in a way
to benefit.

5. Fifth issue is how to make sure that the same information system is being
used the same way in every café Hollywood branch.

Café Hollywood, the very first Hollywood Thematic Restaurant in Bangladesh

Café Hollywood is looking to improve their sales and expand their customer
demographic by adding new offers in their menus and new food items. They
increase sales by Building Potential Relationships with Customers. Their first
priority is their customers. They always think about customer’s comfort.

They promote their café through social network like Facebook. Not only that, they
are also publishing their restaurant using leaflet. They provide leaflet near school,
collage, university and shopping mall.

They computerized database, credit payment machine and so on. They


computerized their every single data, calculation. It makes their life easier. They
also provide some opportunity to their clients. They take cashes as well as they
have credit payment machine. Customers can pay their bill through credit or visa
card.
They have account manager and marketing and sales officers.

Marketing officer handles specific works. Like –

 Preparing, planning and project managing the publication of all publicity


material to maximize promotion.

 Creating marketing campaigns.

 Creating and developing new innovative ways to communicate the company


message to their existing customers.

 Contributing to the annual sales and marketing plan.

 Planning and project managing marketing events and evaluating their

 Supporting the marketing manager in day to day marketing activities.

Sales manager manages sales of the company’s products and services in within a
defined geographic area, province or country. He ensures consistent, profitable
growth in sales revenues through positive planning, deployment and management
of sales personnel. Identifies objectives, strategies and action plans to improve
short- and long-term sales and earnings.

The account manager:

 Operate as the lead point of contact for any and all matters specific to the
customers
 Build and maintain strong, long-lasting customer relationships
 Develop a trusted advisor relationship with key customer
 Ensure the timely and successful delivery of our solutions according to
customer needs and objectives
 Communicate clearly the progress of monthly/quarterly initiatives

top 20 restaurants in Bangladesh.

the opportunity to celebrate any kinds of party. Customers can book their table a
day before if they want. They give many exciting offers through facebook and
leaflet in every occasion. Their target market is mainly students of universities.
That is why their price range is reasonable. They directly deliver foods to their
customers if they order for home delivery. Café Hollywood also provides their
delivery service through foodpanda. It makes customers more satisfied.

Café Hollywood opened their own restaurant typically possess an abundance of


highly desirable traits and skills. Almost without exception, they're very capable
individuals who are naturally optimistic, creative, dedicated, highly motivated,
action-oriented, and are not afraid of hard work and long hours to achieve their
goals.

Café Hollywood has three major areas helps to achieve its potential for success.

Operations include all those functions that are necessary to prepare and serve
your products to their customers. It includes all those activities that take
place every day in the kitchen and table.

 Financial:

Financial functions deals with safeguarding cash, accounting, cash


management, cost control as well as operational and financial reporting.

Marketing is getting the word out about the cafe and positioning it correctly
in the minds of the public. It includes public relations, community
involvement, advertising, promotions and projecting the right image.

Nothing is perfect. Having so many advantages Café Hollywood can improve


more. Customers search where they can have cheaper rate with good quality, good
services and hygienic environment. Café Hollywood has everything but to compete
with other top restaurant Café Hollywood can give discount to the students. They
can also have a student package. It will attract students more.

To compete with other top restaurant if they make their price lower it will be more
beneficial for them. People always want good quality, hygienic environment and
good service in lower prices.

They can also add mobile banking in their service. It will make their customers life
easier.

If they improve their washroom it will be beneficial for customers. As their first
priority is their customer then they have to think customer’s comfort first.

They can add free Wi-Fi for the customers. They will spend their time happily.

Customers like to see how the food is made and have more of an interaction with
the chefs. If they have an open cooking area then customer will be more assure
about their hygienic food. This idea will be very unique.

We should create little more new items. They should experiment with new
products, discontinuing less successful ones. They should launch their cafe in all
