MQBS3010 – Introduction to Teams – Week 03.

02

Having gone through ‘Introduction to Teams’ in the Teamwork Module, complete the
following tasks as a team. The tasks each week will be the scaffolding to help your
Capstone Project which you are working on as a team – see the Capstone Project
Module.

Record your own and your team’s responses in this DOC file (or elsewhere) and save this file in a new
folder on your device called ‘Capstone Log’. If you are performing this task F2F and handwriting,
take a picture of your responses and save it in your personal Capstone Log. If you are performing
this task online you can type directly in this file and save it for your own records. We will continue to
populate the Capstone Log throughout the session. You will be required to draw upon the log later
during the session. All you need are dot points, thought bubbles, brainstorms (anything that helps you
make notes of team meetings!) for you to refer back to your ongoing discussions each week – this
document will not be marked. We are encouraging you to keep the log for your own benefit and be
able to reflect on it at the end of the session (reflecting at the end of the session is part of the Capstone
Report).

Introduction to Teams
Part 1 – In Teams – Forming (~45 minutes)

The purpose of this activity is for the team to get to know each other and begin forming
as a team.

Unless someone volunteers for the role for today, the team leader for today is the
person whose first name is closest to the letter “B”. The team leader for today needs to
ensure the question numbers below are followed methodically.

1. Introduce yourselves to your team and share your contact details.

2. Have you shared the peer-review summary sheets with your team members – do it now!

3. Verbally share a brief description of your peer-review summaries with your team. Feel free to
ask each other questions!

4. Do you understand the requirements of the Capstone Project? Discuss with each other
about what you think the Capstone Project is about. Correct each others’ misconceptions if any!

5. Of the nominated SDGs for this session, which do you personally relate to? Discuss

6. Of the nominated SDGs for this session, which one should your team focus on for the project?
Write this down. (Don’t worry you are not locking it in today!)

7. What are some preliminary ideas for your project? Write these down. (Don’t worry you are
not locking it in today!)

Part 2 – In Teams – Lego Serious Play Team-building task (~45 minutes)

The purpose of this activity is for the team to perform a tangible team task and reflect
on team processes and team effectiveness.

8. Your lecturer will outline a team task for you to perform as a team.

9. Before you perform the team task (10 minutes): Discuss how you are going to work as a
team and your team processes for this team task to be effective. Write your plan down.

10. Perform the task.

11. After you perform the team task (10 minutes): Reflect on your processes and your
effectiveness – what worked and what did not work and why? How can you re-form your team
processes to be more effective as a team? Write these ideas down.

12. Your lecturer will give you an opportunity to complete the team task again.

13. After your second attempt: Reflect on your processes and your effectiveness, comparing and
contrasting it with your first attempt – what worked and what did not work and why? What have
you learnt about teamwork from these exercises? Write these ideas down.

Part 3 – Whole-of-class – The next few questions are from the relevant section of the
Teamwork Module (~45 minutes)

The purpose of this activity is to connect your experiences in Part 2 with your pre-
reading from the Teamwork Module so that you can translate your experiences to your
Capstone Project.

14. Compare and contrast a ‘Team’ and a ‘Group’. You can refer to Part 2 above to give you an
example to refer to.

15. Define each of the following terms and consider as a team how you would conceptualise and
measure the following three parameters for your team throughout the session: ‘Team Task’,
‘Team Processes’, ‘Team Effectiveness’. You may consider the relevant diagram in the module,
‘The Team Context’. You can refer to Part 2 above to give you an example to refer to.

16. Define each of the terms in the ‘IPO Framework’ and consider how you would conceptualise and
measure the following three parameters for your team: ‘Inputs’, ‘Processes’, ‘Outputs’. You may
consider the relevant diagram in the module, ‘The IPO Framework’. You can refer to Part 2 above
to give you an example to refer to.

17. Define each stage of the Tuckman Framework. Compare and contrast each stage. You can refer to
Part 2 above to give you an example to refer to.

In Teams – Time remaining or after the seminar.

The purpose of this activity is for you to continue to build relationships, build a positive
team culture, and create an atmosphere of collaboration.

18. Organise a social gathering for your team. Get to know your team members. Consider a game of
‘Two Truths, One Lie’. The aim of the game is to figure out which one is the lie. Each person takes
turns to share 3 interesting statements about themselves, but one of these 3 statements is a lie.
After sharing these 3 statements have been shared by a team member, the others can ask 3
questions to clarify the statements. Then everyone votes on what they perceive to be a lie.
