UNDERSTAND
Topic Title: Communication Media

Communication is a process of using words, sounds, signs, or behaviors to express or exchange

information or to express one’s ideas, thoughts, feelings, etc., to someone else. It is the exchange of
information and the expression of feeling that can result in understanding. When a person has ideas
about something, he/she will definitely want to share it with others, and so ways and means are
thought and utilized in transmitting the message. To achieve an effective and meaningful
communication various tools are used, which are also called media of communication.
The word media was derived from the Latin word medius, which means “middle.” It is the plural
of medium, which refers to the tools or means people use to transfer the information from a sender to
a receiver. Communication media are the outlets or tools used to store and deliver information or
data. This is how information is spread and how communication process works.
These communication media have types. These include print media, broadcast media, film or
cinema media, digital media, new media and social media. A message is passed on to others with the
help of the different types of media. This is how media enters the picture as an aid that help spread
information in different forms. Media also helps improve the way people communicate with others.
Advantages of Communication Media
 It is able to get information to the public in a quick and timely manner.
 It can warn people of impending bad weather, dangerous situations in a city, a state,
or country.
 It has the resources to expose injustices, corruption, or abuse of power that an average citizen
would never be able to expose. This can lead to positive change in our country.
 It has uncovered events where elected officials have been using government workers to
campaign for them while they are supposedly working on the government business.
 It has uncovered scams where people try to take money dishonestly.
 It keeps us updated on news, weather, and sporting events.
 It can play a very important and helpful role.
Disadvantages of Media
 It may bring a risk of inaccurate reporting and a loss of privacy.
 Sometimes, in a rush to be the first to break a story, the media puts out incorrect or inaccurate
information. This can be embarrassing depending on the information, it can harm a person’s
reputation.
 It is very easy for people to use the media to make false claims or make claims that are only
half true. A few political candidates and high-profile news reporters sometimes do this.
 It is hard to check everything that is reported or stated by the media.

 Additionally, with all the cameras and coverage today, there really is no privacy.
 When somebody makes a mistake or inadvertently says something wrong, it can get blown
way out of proportion.

Process of Communication

In order to understand how information flows within the media, one should first understand how
the basic communication process works.

The simplest and perhaps the oldest model is the Shannon-Weaver Model of communication
( See Fig.1) that shows a linear type of communication process. This means that we follow a straight
line of sending a message from one point to another. From a sender, a message is delivered using a
channel to reach the receiver.

In the example, the sender(S) is you, the one who has an idea to share. Thus, you are now the source.
From the source, the message (M) will be encoded and relayed as a piece of information. You may use the
megaphone as your channels(C) to spread your message. The encoded message is decoded under receipt by
the receiver. The last part of the cycle is called the feedback.
