Activity 1: Understanding the Message of a Media Text
Find a media text or media product (such as movie poster, postcard,
advertisement, etc.) that conveys a message. For Modular learners, you may look for a sample
media text in an old newspaper or magazine. Using the given example, identify the different
codes and conventions used in the media text that helped you understand its meaning or
message. Use the table below.

Sample Media Text:

Symbolic Codes:
(List down the symbolic codes found in the media text that helped in conveying a
message.)
1. Color - The color scheme of the poster is typical of that in the horror genre.
The colors are drained, muted and with lack of vibrancy which gives it a dark
and eerie atmosphere.
2. Setting – There’s a house at the background of the poster which gives the
audience an idea that the storyline would take place inside the house.
3. Mise en scene (costume) – The boy in the poster is wearing pyjamas in red
color which can signify danger, death, or murder.
4. Acting (facial expression) – The boy in the poster is portraying a sinister
look and expressing little to no emotion which entices the audience to know
what is wrong with him.
5. Acting (body language) – The mid shot image of the boy is standing in an
unusual straight manner, signifying that the boy might be possessed by an evil
spirit.
Technical Codes:
(List down the technical codes found in the media text that helped in conveying a
message)
1. Camera work - The house is photographed from a low angle to give an
unsettling feature for the audience and to make them feel disorientated and
intimidated.
2. Lighting - Low-key lighting, dim hue and shadows are present in the film
poster which creates tension due to its mysterious and dark atmosphere.
3. Editing - The background edit of the poster is a dark cloudy sky which gives
the film a dark and eerie atmosphere.
4. Camerawork - The main image is a mid-shot of a young boy in pyjamas
standing in front of the house, indicating that he is the main character in the
film.
5. Camerawork - There is a short depth of field in the main image, the boy
being in focus and the house being out of focus to give a subtle hint as to what
the film is about.
Written Codes:
(List down the written codes found in the media text that helped in conveying a
message)
1. The quote ‘it’s not the house that’s haunted’ entices the viewers to see the
film as they would be curious as to what really is haunted if it’s not the house.
2. The text ‘From the makers of Paranormal Activity and SAW’ is an example
of the film creators previous work to give an idea as to what to expect from the
new film.
3. The title of the film is written in white color against a dark background to
make it stand out. Moreover, a part of the title is red which is a connotation of
danger, blood, or death.
4. Inside the boy's eyes, the words 'INSIDIOUS' and 'IS' are written,
suggesting that something supernatural is effecting the boy.
5. The director of the film is written in the poster to let the audience know that
it was made by the people who have already produced two popular, good
selling films.
