PROPER ATTIRE
Believe it or not, lab safety actually begins before you ever leave your home. What you wear
can have a big impact on the safety of your working environment. When entering a lab, it is
important to wear appropriate clothing for your safety and the safety of others.

PROPER DRESS INCLUDE:


✓ A shirt that covers the torso and upper arms
✓ Long Pants
✓ Close-toed shoes

BEFORE ENTERING THE LAB:


✓ Tie back all long or loose hair
✓ Place all phones, jewelry, and other belongings in your locker
Proper Attire: Shirt covering all of the torso and upper arms, Long
pants, closed toed shoes, Short Hair or Long hair that is tied back.
PPE OR PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
In addition to wearing the proper clothing, disposing of all food items, and leaving your
belongings in a locker before entering the Lab, using correct PPE or Personal Protective
Equipment is also very important for your safety. It helps protect your clothing, eyes, and skin
while you work.

PPE or Personal Protective Equipment


Lab coat (fully buttoned), Safety glasses, Latex or Nitrile Gloves
Do’s and Don’ts inside the Laboratory

✓ Food and drinks are absolutely prohibited in the lab environment. Dispose of these before
entering the Lab.
✓ Make sure to immediately clean up any spills or contamination to the lab environment
✓ Trash, boxes, and other debris, should be cleared from the lab and put in the proper disposal
container.
Instructions

Accidents can happen in the lab at anytime. The best way to respond is to know which piece of safety
equipment to use for each situation.

Respond to the following emergencies by looking around the room and selecting the appropriate piece
of safety equipment to deal with each situation before the timer runs out. Be careful, each incorrect
selection will deduct five seconds from the timer.
Following Instructions

One of the most critical rules of lab safety is to follow directions. Following directions creates a safe and
productive lab environment for the students and the instructor.

In this activity, carefully read and follow the directions listed on the lab activity handout sheet. Perform
all the steps in the correct order to complete the lab activity without incident.
