MOTION OF TECTONIC PLATES

Sarah J’Nhelle G. Rocacorba 10 St. Peter

CONVERGENT (COLLIDING)
q This occurs when plates move towards each other and
collide. This type of plate boundary is also called
destructive plate boundary. it happens when the two
plates are pushing toward each other. When a moving
plate of dense oceanic lithosphere collides with a plate
moving in the oppisite direction, one of the plates
subducts beneath each other. The younger of the two
plates wikk step up over the older plate because its
former has less density, while the heavier plate plunges
steeply through the asthenosphere and descends into
Earth creating a trench.

DIVERGENT(spreading)
q This is where two lithosperic plates move
apart from each other. It is also known as
constructive boundary. The magma also
spreads outward, forming new ocean
floor and new oceanic crust. A divergent
boundary is marked by a mid-oceanic
ridge, which is a characteristic of an
oceanic spreading center that is
responsible for seafloor spreading.
3
Transform fault(LATERAL)

q It is a zone between two plates that slide

horizontally past one each other.
Transformm boundaries are generally
vertical and parallel to the direction of
movement. The San Andreas Fault zone in
California is a transform fault that
connects two diverging boundaries,
namely the East Pacific Rise along the
Pacific Ocean and South Gorda in Florida.

How would you deal with living near a plate boundary?

v If we live near a plate boundary, we should prepare ourselves

for an earthquakes by preparing an emergency kits in case
there is an earthquake or volcanic eruption. We can also
construct a buildings where it can resist earthquakes. Plate
Boundaries are very dangerous to live in but if we prepare and
ready ourselves, it can lessen the danger.
