Employment Trends

The aviation industry comprises all the aspects of air travel and serves a vital role in

providing transportation services for both people and goods. It also involves the activities that

facilitate air travel, including aircraft manufacturing, aircraft maintenance, military aviation, and

aviation research companies. The aviation industry provides numerous vacancies and choices as

relates to career development. One of these career choices is the avionic technician specializing

in the maintenance and repair of electronic systems and instruments in aircraft (Koornneef et al.,

2020). Avionics maintenance serves to maximize the service lifespan of the electronic

instruments and systems.

Given that the aviation industry involves all aspects of airspace travel and facilitating

activities, many contributors exist to the industry. The leading contributing companies in the

industry include Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Airbus, United Technologies, Alaska Airlines, and

Northrop Grumman. These contributing companies play a vital role in providing reliable and

essential services in the aviation industry. The companies also offer numerous opportunities to

the maintenance technicians, including avionics maintenance, thus contributing to the economy's

growth.

Currently hiring companies include Draken International, Lockheed Martin, Vertex

Aerospace, Sierra Nevada Corporation, and SpaceX. These companies have provided the

required qualifications for the avionics technician position on their websites, including preferred

experience, skills, and academic qualifications. By hiring persons with expertise and experience,

these companies aim to grow the industry to greater heights, thus contributing to social and

economic development in the country.

There also seem to exist various gaps in the aviation industry, especially for someone

who wants to work as an avionics technician. These include the gap between service delivery and

external communication, service specifications and delivery, consumer expectation and

management perception, and management perception and quality specification. The gap between

consumer expectation and management perception exists when the management fails to correctly

perceive the consumers' needs and expectations (Hossain et al., 2016). For example, the

management may perceive that the consumer is more concerned with ambiance than price, while

it may be the other way round. As an avionics technician, one must be keen to understand the

consumer's needs and expectations clearly.

The aviation industry is a very dynamic industry, with companies making new

announcements from time to time. In addition to being a constantly changing industry, aviation

employs highly skilled personnel and is heavily regulated. The growing nature of the industry

has increased the need for more avionics technicians in the industry, thus creating more

employment opportunities. For example, in the United States, there were approximately 16 000

avionics in 2019, with the job market expected to grow by 5% between 2019-2029 (U.S Bureau

of Labor Statistics, 2021).

Technological advancement is a key factor that has seen the changing employment trends

in the industry, particularly for avionics maintenance. The various advancements in this field

include the use of robots, paperless systems, and designed security. The use of robots has

increased the employment of avionic technicians in the aviation industry since they are electronic

instruments. It is vital to note that technicians are provided with safety and security conditions in

the use of these instruments. According to Cahill et al. (2020), the avionic technician needs to be

fit for work and be aware of the risk that might arise in their line of duty, affecting their health,

safety, and performance. These advancements serve to increase the technicians' performance,

thus allowing them to work under minimum supervision.
