OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT

ACTIVITY #2

1.) Strategizing capacity in operations management ensures that systems are operating at adequate
levels to achieve company goals without over-provisioning resources. By identifying and
eliminating extraneous activities, companies can reduce costs and increase efficiency.

2.) A. Airlines - Modifying or moving facilities and equipment is widely used strategy by airline
industry. They use ‘demand-driven dispatch’ to adjust demand fluctuations. Airlines have
started experimenting on methods which assign airplanes to flight schedules according to the
fluctuating needs of market. The success of using this method relays on correct understanding
of demand and the ability to move airplanes soon with different arrangement of seating as per
the capacity. For this Boeing 777 aircraft is used because it is flexible and can reconfigure within
hours to change seating arrangement of all classes.

B. Restaurants – Restaurant accomplishes modifying or moving facilities and equipment strategy

by re-configuring the rooms to adjust the daily fluctuations in demand.

C. Denstists - If you need more new patients, you need to be marketing. More often than not, a
business' first response to economic woes is to panic and to hold tight to money. Marketing is
often the first item to go when it comes to cutting the budget. This is absolutely what not to do
when the need for new patients is higher than ever. Case in point: A Jameson client in a small
community in Washington is smack dab in the middle of a struggling economic area. Blue collar,
high unemployment, the list goes on and on. They invested in a full-blown marketing campaign
with Jameson Marketing and found their new-patient numbers more than doubled in less than
one year. What does this mean to you? It means don't pull your marketing budget. In fact, now's
the time to refine your efforts — take a look at what message you are sending out to your
community and who that message is attracting. Are you targeting to the appropriate potential
patient for your practice? You may need to have a marketing professional look over your
collateral to tell you just what you are saying and who is seeing it.

3.) Design capacity is the theoretical maximum output of a system in a given period under ideal
conditions. … Capacity available is the capacity of a system or resource to produce a quantity of
output in a given time period.

4.) This is an effective way of capitalizing on technological breakthrough. Phasing out capacity:The
outdated manufacturing facilities cause excessive plant closures and down time.
