A NARRATIVE REPORT DURING THE 4-DAY SEMINAR ON SUMMER LINGUISTICS 2019

The Summer Seminar in Linguistics (SSL) is an intensive training seminar for

professionals related to the linguistic such as Filipino and English language teachers. It tackles
the linguistic aspect of these languages so that teachers are encouraged to teach based on
linguistic findings and are better equipped when faced with questions about language and
grammar.

For this year, the Kalinga State University sent three members of the teaching faculty
who specialize in English namely: Dr. Paulino Reyes II, Dennis Ocampo and Jinky Valdez to
attend the said seminar with the title: Reanalyzing English Grammar and Training in Error
Density Index (EDI) Analysis on May 14-17 at the University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon
City.

Registration of participants was done as early as 7:30 in the morning on May 14. At 9
o’clock, Prof. Jonathan C. Malicsi, the trainer, started his lecture on Philippine English as a
Product of Random Mutations among Language. A diagnostic exercise was also administered
afterwards. The afternoon session was characterized by discussions on Introduction to Formal
Generative Grammar and Redefining Parts of Speech as Distribution Classes.

Day 2 started with giving feedbacks on the Diagnostic Exercise and it lasted until lunch
time. Sentence Patterns as Functions of the Verb was the center of lecture during the afternoon
session.

The third day’s sessions were on the Nominal Phrase (Predeterminer, determiner, noun
stem, grammatical number, pronouns, gender, case and nominalization of clauses) and the
Adjectival and Adverbial Phrases (Degrees, Relativization and Attribution, Adjectivalization and
Adverbialization of Clauses.

The last day was highlighted by training participants on the EDI analysis. The trainer
presented texts which were analyzed using EDI process. The day ended through giving of
certificates of Appearance and Participation.

Truly, language is dynamic; hence, teachers and educators need to attend such seminar
to keep their selves updated with the changes in the language they are teaching.
