EXERCISES

Answer the following question honestly.

1. List down the importance of tuning up the vehicle engine.

 It restores the engine to the performance levels intended by the manufacturer.

 It calls for the replacement of parts that are approaching or have reached the end of
their useful life, and for servicing those that can be restored to “new part” reliability.
 It reduces the cost of possible car repairs.
 Performing tune-up may help to extend the life span or the longevity of the vehicle.
 It also increases the efficiency of the vehicle.

2. Narrate the step by step procedure in tuning up Toyota 4k engine

 Prepare the needed tools.

 Remove either the negative or positive connection of the battery to avoid unexpected
spark while performing the tune-up.
 Remove the PCV hose and the valve cover of the engine
 Using a 19mm box wrench, turn the crankshaft in a clockwise direction and set the
piston number 1 to the Top Dead Center (TDC) while observing the exhaust valve in
cylinder number 4. (Align the timing mark to the zero degrees mark on the timing chain
cover)
 Using a feeler gauge, a flat screwdriver, and a 12mm box wrench. Adjust the valve on
cylinder number 1. (NOTE: valve clearance for the intake valves is .008" and for the
exhaust valves is .012")
 Turn the crankshaft 180 degrees clockwise. Set piston number 3 to TDC while observing
the exhaust valve of cylinder number 2.
 Following the STEP #2, adjust the intake and exhaust valves of the cylinder number 3.
 Turn the crankshaft 180 degrees clockwise. Set piston number 4 to TDC while observing
the exhaust valve of cylinder number 1.
 Following the STEP #2, adjust the intake and exhaust valves of the cylinder number 4.
 Turn the crankshaft 180 degrees clockwise. Set piston number 2 to TDC while observing
the exhaust valve of cylinder number 3.
 Following the STEP #2, adjust the intake and exhaust valves of the cylinder number 2.
 NOTE: Use the feeler gauge to double-check the valve clearance of each valve.

3. Is changing of oil a part of engine tune-up? Why?

Yes, it is a part of engine tune-up because changing of oil is one of the preventive maintenance
of an engine. It is obvious that engines are made up of many moving parts, and those parts
need to be properly lubricated to prevent damages. Oil in the engine provides this very
important function.

4. List down all the tune-up essentials on older engine.

 Spark plugs (gapped to the correct specs).

 Belt tension
 Fuel filter
 Air filter
 Rotors and Distributor cap
 Carburetor balance
 Ignition timing
 Setting of the idle speed
 Adjustment of the idle mixture
