8. Look at the graph showing worldwide rice consumption. Write sentences
about the four projections. Remember to use language from the box on page
190 to indicate that the data is uncertain.

From the graph of four estimates of world rice consumption, the following data are
obtained:
1. According to projections 1,2,3, and 4, estimated worldwide rice consumption in
1990 was 330 metric tons, and world's total rice consumption in 2010 is expected
to rise to 430 metric tons.
2. According to Projection 1, rice consumption around the world is expected to
grow to over 520 metric tonnes.
3. According to Projection 2, in 2020 world rice consumption will be 450 metric
tonnes and the number is predicted to increase to 500 metric tonnes in 2040.
4. According to projection 3, in 2010 to 2030 the world's rice consumption is
estimated to be stable at 430 metric tons, and in 2040 the world's rice
consumption is predicted to rise by 480 metric tonnes.
5. According to projection 4, total worldwide rice consumption will decrease by 100
metric tons from 2010 to 2040, and this trend is expected to continue next year.
1. What basic information does the graph provide?
2. What do the four lines on the graph indicate?
3. What is measured on the vertical axis? What unit of measurement is used?
4. What is measured on the horizontal axis?
5. What trends do you see in the graph?
6. What are some of the most important features of this graph?
7. Should you try to report on all the changes in direction that you see in the graph?
Why?/Why not?
Answer :
1. The information provided is an estimate of rice consumption worldwide over a
period of 50 years
2. Estimated amount of rice consumption over the past 50 years.
3. The vertical axis on the graph shows the amount of rice consumed in tons.
4. The horizontal axis on the chart shows the time (years).
5. In the graph presented there is a tendency, namely the x-axis stating the time
(years) the interval of additional time presented is relatively constant with the
addition of time every 10 years. Meanwhile, on the y-axis, the amount of rice
consumed in tons also shows a relatively similar addition, namely 100 tons.
6. Increase and decrease in the amount of rice consumption shown on projection
lines 1, 2, 3, and 4.
7. No, because in certain sections projections 1,2,3 and 4 present the same
information.
