FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTIONS

Consider the Scores of 50 students in a statistics examination:

75 89 66 52 90 68 83 94 77 60
38 47 87 65 97 49 65 70 73 81
85 77 83 56 63 79 69 82 84 70
62 75 29 88 74 37 81 76 74 63
69 73 91 87 76 58 63 60 71 82

construct the frequency table,

1. m = √ 50 = 7.07 approx. 8 (no. of classes)
2. r = (97 – 29) = 68 (range)
3. k = r/m = 68/8 = 8.5 approx. 9 (class with or class size)

lower limit +upper limit

Class mark – the middle value or the average between the lower limit and upper limit, i.e.
2
Class Boundaries – the true limit of the classes.
upper limit of the previous class+ lower limit of the proceeding class
( 2 )
Class interval – it is the difference between the class boundaries, i.e.
( upper class boundaries−lower class boundaries )
Relative Frequency – this is a percentage distribution of the frequency each class in relation to the total number of
observation. ( f /N )

Cumulative Frequency – the sum of the relative frequency as it goes down the classes.
Graphical Presentation of Frequency Distribution

Frequency Distribution can be presented by Histogram, Frequency Polygon or Ogive.
