Introductory Message
The Learning Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the teaching-learning
activities specified in each Most Essential Competency (MELC) with minimal or no face-
to-face encounter between you and learner. This will be made available to the learners
with the references/links to ease the independent learning.
The Learning Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue learning even if
you are not in school. This learning material provides you with meaningful and engaging
activities for independent learning. Being an active learner, carefully read and
understand the instructions then perform the activities and answer the assessments.
This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

Quarter 3, Week 3
The property of continuity is exhibited by various aspects of nature. The flow of time in
human life; the water’s flow in the river and its continuous fall along steep areas.
A function is said to be continuous if you can sketch its graph on a curve without lifting
your pen even once. A function is continuous at a particular point if there is no break in its graph
at that point.
Polynomial and Absolute Value Functions are continuous everywhere. Rational
Functions are continuous in their respective domains.
Example 1
𝒇(𝒙) 𝟐𝒙 𝟔
3
Solution:
To check if the function is continuous at x=4, trace the graph from the left side of
the number going to the right side without lifting your pen. Hence, we can say
that the function is continuous at x=4.
Example 2
𝟐𝒙𝟐 +𝒙−𝟑
𝒈(𝒙)
𝒙−𝟏
Solution:
Trace the graph from the left of x=1 going to the right of x=1. One finds that
he/she must lift his/her pen briefly upon reaching x=1, creating a hole in the
graph. Thus, the function is discontinuous at x=1.
Exercise 1
− −
1. Determine if ( ) is continuous at:
+
A. x=-4
B. x=0
4
2. Determine if ( ) is continuous at:
A. x=1
B. x=2
( )
Example 3
A. x=-2
B. x=3
( )
5
Solution:
A. If we trace the graph of the function from the left of x=-2 to the right of x=-2, you will
not lift your pen. Therefore, the function is continuous at x=-2
B. If we trace the graph to the left of x=3 going to the right of x=3, we have to lift our pen
since at the left of x=3, the function will go downward indefinitely, while at the right of
x=3, the function will go upward indefinitely. In other words,
𝟏 𝟏
𝒙 𝟑 𝒙−𝟑 and 𝒙 𝟑 𝒙−𝟑
Example 4
𝒙𝟐 𝟏 𝒇𝒙
Determine if the function 𝒇(𝒙) { is continuous at:
𝟏 𝒇𝒙
A. x=0
B. x=2
Solution:
A. If we trace the graph to the left of x=0 going to the right of x=0, we have to lift our pen
since there is a break or hole at (0,-1). Thus, f(x) is discontinuous at x=0.
B. The function f(x) is continuous at x=2 because we can trace the graph from the left of
2 and from the right of 2 without lifting the pen.
Exercise 2
|𝒙 𝟑| 𝒇 𝒙 𝟑
1. Determine if 𝒇(𝒙) { is continuous at:
𝟐 𝒇𝒙 𝟑
A. x=3
B. x=5
6
𝒙+𝟏
2. Given the graph of 𝒇(𝒙) , determine if the function is continuous at:
𝒙−𝟏
A. x=-1
B. x=1
A. x=0
B. x=7
