What is Bamboo?
Bamboo is a woody plant with a hollow stem that's in the grass family.
When bamboo is harvested, and processed, it can be used to make things like
flooring, paper, and chopsticks.
A giant woody grass which is grown chiefly in the tropics. The hollow jointed
stem of the bamboo plant, used as a cane or to make furniture and implements.

If bamboo is prepared correctly, it can be eaten — you'll find bamboo shoots in
many Chinese dishes, for example. Without the right preparation, though,
bamboo is toxic to humans. Many products are made from bamboo in part
because it's one of the fastest-growing plants in the world. Bamboo is
originally from the Dutch bamboe, which in turn comes from the
Portuguese bambu. The root is thought to be the Malay word samambu.
Is Bamboo Sustainable?
Bamboo has been used in a variety of construction applications to varying
degrees of success. Bamboo is a sustainable material as its growth rate
reaching 100 cm in a 24 hr period. It can be used as a construction material. In
fact, it is already used in many high-rise buildings.
Making more use of bamboo for common buildings practices would allow forest
to regenerate and help to prevent future deforestation effort. It helps in making
more oxygen. Its durability is six years. Bamboo is heavier than coal and
stronger then steel.
But if bamboo is left untreated it can swell with water and rot. It had not been
used to reinforcement According to civil engineering magazines (CE) article,
the composite 80 percent bamboo, 20 percent adhesive, and 300 percent more
dense than raw. Bamboo is water resistant does not swell and is durable.
Types OF Bamboos
Bamboo can be categorized under two categories:
Sympodial bamboo
Monopodial bamboo
SYMPODIAL BAMBOO:
Benefits of Bamboo
Technically a grass, bamboo has been used in decorations and a
number of other assortments, but has only recently been used on a
large scale for floors. Perhaps as a result of the sustainable movement,
the material has become increasingly popular.
The benefits of bamboo are many fold. First of all, it is a natural anti-
bacterial that will help buildings where there are children or people who
cannot be in contact with bacteria for fear of sickness. Another great
feature of bamboo is that it is water resistant, which makes it a better
choice than many other hardwood floors that can stain or deteriorate
when any kind of moisture gets in contact. It is also an extremely
durable piece of material that is easy to move, yet still hard enough to
provide you with great flooring.
BAMBOO IN BUILDINGS:
Bamboo has good engineering properties and it is a feasible substitute
for other material for housing and construction sector.
Bamboo has high tensile strength, very good strength to weight rationIt
can be easily worked upon by simple tools.
