Photosynthesis and Cellular

Respiration
What to Complete Tuesday November 12th

You are to complete 1-4 individually. Show the substitute once you are done and you
can work in a group to answer lab questions and Quizizz. Make sure all first names on
the Quizizz.
1. Check your grades – if you have a Z for a workbook grade you need to finished that
assignment first! Workbooks that have not been completed are in baskets on the side
counter. DO NOT RIP OUT PAGES!
2. Read through the PowerPoint slides on Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration.
3. Complete the Practice Questions in your second section.
1. Title: Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration
4. Make sure you are able to answer the Essential questions at the end of the
PowerPoint after you have moved through the PowerPoint.
5. Complete the Osmosis Lab Questions
6. Play the Quizizz to check comprehension; joinmyquiz.com Code: 084491
Photosynthesis
Three Materials Needed for a Green Plant to Make its
Own Food
1. Light energy from the Sun
2. Water from the soil
3. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) from the air

This food-making process is called photosynthesis which occurs in the

chloroplast. This only occurs during the daylight hours. Let’s
investigate further into how this process works.
Practice Questions– Process of Photosynthesis Sketch

1. Make a quick sketch of this

drawing of photosynthesis.
Make it large enough to add
details during lesson

2. Add the 3 materials needed

for photosynthesis to the
picture.

3. Include arrows to indicate the

direction of flow.
Photosynthesis
Chlorophyll Light Energy
• The Sun or light from another
source hits the leaves.
• The pigment chlorophyll (found in
the chloroplasts) allows the plant
to absorb the light energy.
• Only occurs in green leaves

Chloroplast
Photosynthesis
Water

• enters the roots of a green plant

from the soil
• is transported up the plant to the
leaves through special tissue in the
plant
Photosynthesis

Carbon Dioxide
• Carbon dioxide from the
atmosphere enters the leaves
of green plants through
special structures
• Green plants remove tons of
CO2 from the atmosphere
Practice Questions– How do Plants get the Resources needed?

You now know part of the

equation for photosynthesis.

4. How do plants get the

materials need to undergo
photosynthesis?
5. Why do plant cells have to do
photosynthesis but animal cells
do not?
Photosynthesis
Equation
• The ingredients for making food in a green plant can be written in a
chemical equation.
• The first part of the photosynthesis equation is written below.

Carbon Dioxide Water

6CO2 + 6H20 + energy from the sun
Photosynthesis

Two Products are made during Photosynthesis

1. Sugar (in the form of glucose)
2. Oxygen (Yay! Just what we need!)

In a chemical equation these two things are the products of the

chemical reaction.

Sugar Oxygen
C6H12O6 + 6O2
Practice Questions– Process of Photosynthesis

6. Add the 2 materials

produced from
photosynthesis to the
picture.

7. Include arrows to
indicate the direction of
flow.
Photosynthesis

Glucose (sugar)
• produced in the leaf but must be
transported through special tissue
to other parts of the plant
• more produced than is needed for
immediate use by the plant so the
extra is stored until the plant needs
it
Photosynthesis
CO2
Oxygen
• Oxygen is a byproduct released
during photosynthesis
• The oxygen moves out of the plant
through structures in the leaf
• The process of photosynthesis puts
tons of oxygen back into our
atmosphere
O2
Photosynthesis Review:
• Photosynthesis is the process by which the energy of sunlight is
converted into the energy of glucose
Photosynthesis Review:
• Photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplasts
of plants

• The light absorbing compound in the

chloroplast is a pigment— these pigments
absorb some wavelengths of light and
reflect others—the color our eyes see is
the color that the pigment reflects

• Chlorophyll is the pigment inside the

chloroplast the absorbs light for
photosynthesis
Practice Questions– Light and Photosynthesis

8. Do you think plants would

grow better under a green
light source or under a red
light source? Explain.
Practice Questions– Equation of Photosynthesis

9. Write out the

equation for
photosynthesis.
General formula for photosynthesis :

carbon dioxide + water + light glucose + oxygen

(Reactants / Inputs) (Product)

6CO2 + 6H2O + light C6H12O6 + 6O2

Cellular Respiration
• Cells require a constant source of energy
for life processes but keep only a small
amount of ATP on hand. Cells can
regenerate ATP as needed by using the
energy stored in foods like glucose.
• The energy stored in glucose by
photosynthesis is released by cellular
respiration and repackaged into the
energy of ATP.
Practice Questions– Origins of Cellular Respiration
10. How do lions get glucose if they do not
eat plants that are the only producer of
glucose?

11. The law of conservation of mass states

that matter cannot be created or destroyed
in a chemical reaction. How can the law of
conservation apply to movement of
nutrients in the environment in the food
chain to the right?
Cellular Respiration
Cellular respiration is the
process by which the energy of
glucose is released in the cell
to be used for life processes
(movement, breathing, blood
circulation, etc…)
Cellular Respiration occurs in ALL cells
Practice Questions– Equation of Cellular Respiration

12. Write out the equation for cellular

respiration.
Cellular Respiration: requires oxygen
•Occurs in the mitochondria of the cell

C6H12O6 + 6O2 6 CO2 + 6H2O + Energy

(Reactants/inputs) (Products/Outputs)
glucose + oxygen carbon dioxide + water + energy
Cell Energy (Photosynthesis and Respiration)
Energy:
• Energy for living things comes from food. Originally, the energy
in food comes from the sun.
