Make your positive reflection

The widespread growth of slums and informal urban settlements has become a central
challenge to various cities in the Philippines, including Basak, being one of the populated and
urbanized barangays in Mandaue. Many of the urban poor people living in the shantytowns of
Basak, along canals and dumpsites, are exposed to unhealthy environments and unsafe
conditions, posing a serious threat to their health issues. This prompted the researchers to
conduct a study that proposes a corrective solution of utilizing plastics waste as infrastructure
materials to enhance the housing conditions of those gravely affected by such social issues.
Consequently, implementing proposed sustainable and innovative solutions for industrialization
will foster a healthy environment to improve their standard of living.

Shelter is a fundamental human need, and, as such, the right to adequate housing has
been recognized internationally as our human right. Due to the underhanded efforts to achieve
sustainable urbanization policies and strategies, Barangay Basak, Mandaue City, faces many
adverse effects of the unimproved living conditions in the slums and shanty areas. Urban
environmental problems arise primarily in slums due to their hazardous location, lack of solid
waste management, and disaster risk management support. Consequently, this exposes
residents to imminent danger, which must be addressed as this affects this standard of living.
Considering the situation, the use of plastic waste as infrastructure materials will support and
create sustainable industrialization, stimulate innovation, and decrease environmental impacts
and disaster risks are all possible solutions for the community. This corrective and innovative
solution posits as a significant tool to achieve the sustainable development of growing towns and
cities.
