FRAME YOUR CHALLENGE METHOD WORKSHEET

Frame Your Design Challenge

A design challenge articulates the problem you are trying
to solve, and helps you define a scope that is neither too
narrow nor too broad. This worksheet will guide you
through a series of steps to get the right frame on your
challenge and get started on the right foot.

How to Use It What Next?

Start by taking a first stab at writing your Framing the right design challenge is

you’ll ask yourself:

Does my challenge drive toward ultimate

constraints, and allow for a variety of
potential solutions?

You’ll dial those in, and then refine your

challenge until it’s one you’re excited to
tackle.
Frame Your Design Challenge
What is the problem you’re trying to solve?

Barangay Basak, Mandaue City, is suffering from the unimproved living circumstances in the slums and
shanty regions as a result of underhanded efforts to achieve sustainable urbanization plans and
methods. Due to their hazardous position, lack of solid waste management, and disaster risk
management support, slums are the primary source of urban environmental concerns. Additionally, the
residents are exposed to poor environments and dangerous conditions which put their health at risk.

1.Take a stab at framing this challenge as a question:

How will we address the unsafe and inadequate infrastructures in Basak, Mandaue which causes environmental
pollution and poses harm to the health of the community?
2. Now state the key outcome you’re trying to achieve:

We aspire for the residents of the barangay to live in a clean and safe environment, and to provide them sustainable
materials through utilizing plastics that develop sustainable infrastructure and innovation. This objective fulfills SDGs
8 (to increase economic growth and job opportunities) 9 (To build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and
sustainable industrialization), 11(To make sustainable cities and communities) and 14(to reduce plastic wastes
thrown on bodies of water).

3.Write down important aspects of the context or constraints that you need to consider:
These could be shifts that we need to see in the ecosystem around the user, or factors that are technological, geographic or
time-based.
The most common restriction is the funding of the concept. Second is the difficulty of collaborating with the
government as can be seen in their actions that building sustainable homes and cities are generally not given
attention. Another constraint in our goal is the strong implementation and cooperation among the management,
collaborating personnel, employees, and beneficiaries because in the actual scenario, plans get swiveled as
prepared. Lastly, the major issue is the geographic condition. Specifically, urban planning should be implemented
in the barangay before the utilization of our product and the possible negative reactions of the residents for
temporary relocation.

4. What are some possible solutions to your design

question? Think broadly. It’s fine to … sentence is same as existing.

The possible solutions are: Create a manufacturing initiative that centers on addressing the housing problems of
the barangay – which we introduced as E.Forge. Then, this initiative would be presented to Government Housing
Plans in order to plan for a collaboration. These actions would give residents of the barangay job opportunities,
and also a safe and sustainable environment as it is the focus of E.Forge “Building Sustainable Dwellings.”

5. Does your original design question need a tweak? Try it again.

How will we help the residents in collaboration with the local government of Brgy. Basak, Mandaue utilize the
product E.Forge to the enhancement and sustainability of the community as a course of action in enhancing the
poor infrastructure affecting the standard living of the people?
