Quiz #1
1. Describe/define the following:

A. Language- is the basic tool of cognition and the foundation of all

communication. In addition, thinking, learning, and language are all
intertwined. As a result, it serves as the cornerstone for all human
relationships.

B. Language Arts- - were formerly described as the study of the four modes
of language: listening, talking, reading, and writing; however, the National
Council of English Teachers and the International Reading Association
recommended two more language arts: seeing and visually portraying, a
decade ago.

2. Enumerate the principles of language arts teaching and discuss three

 Language Patterns as Habits
 Oral Approach
 Practice and Drill
 Natural Order of Learning Listening-Speaking-Reading-Writing
 Multi-Skill Approach
 Selection and Gradation
 Situational Approach
 Imitation
 Motivation
 Accuracy
 Purpose
 Interest
 Co-relation

 Situational Approach- A child learns well when he is taught in a

meaningful situation.
 Natural Order of Learning Listening-Speaking-Reading-Writing- A
language's four basic abilities are listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
Because a kid first listens to the sounds of a language, then talks, and
finally begins reading and writing, these abilities should be taught in their
natural order.
 Imitation- A child imitates his teacher very much. Thus, the teacher must
become a good model for the children. Tape-recorder, radio, television etc.
can be used for the said purpose.
3. Enumerate and discuss strategies children use in language learning.
 Predicting- youngsters make predictions about what will happen next.
 Organizing- children categorize information.
 Elaborating- the material provided is expanded on by the youngsters.
 Monitoring- children monitor or manage their own progress.

4. Discuss briefly the four language systems

 The Phonological Systems- Children learn to pronounce sounds as they
learn to communicate, and as they learn to read and write, they learn to link
sound with letters. As a result, the phonological system is critical in both
spoken and written language.
 The Syntactic System- This is the grammar system that governs how words
are joined to form sentences. When children join words to form sentences,
they utilize syntactic.
 The Semantic System- This is a vocabulary-building exercise.
 The Pragmatic System- For different reasons, it deals with the social and
cultural elements of language.

5. Enumerate the principles of language arts learning

 Know Your Learners
 Create Conditions for Language Learning
 Design High Quality Lessons for Language Development
 Adapt Lesson Delivery as Needed
 Monitor and Assess Student Language Development
 Engage and Collaborate Within a Community of Practice

6. Discuss briefly (5) five of the principles of language arts learning.

 Know Your Learners -Teachers get a fundamental understanding of their

students' families, languages, cultures, and educational backgrounds in
order to better engage them in the classroom and better plan and deliver
courses.
 Create Conditions for Language Learning- Teachers create a welcoming
environment in the classroom for pupils. They make decisions regarding the
physical environment, resources, and students' social integration in order to
improve language acquisition.
 Design High Quality Lessons for Language Development-. Teachers
create interesting lessons that help students build learning methods and
critical thinking skills while also enhancing language acquisition. The
development of these lessons is guided by the learning objectives.
 Adapt Lesson Delivery as Needed- While teaching, teachers continually
assess their students, monitoring and reflecting on their responses to see if
they are reaching the learning objectives. Teachers examine the reasons for
their pupils' difficulties or lack of challenge and adjust their instruction
accordingly.
 Monitor and Assess Student Language Development- Teachers must
maintain track of language learners' progress and assess it on a regular
basis in order to successfully improve their learning. Teachers frequently
gather data in order to keep track of their pupils' linguistic progress.
 Engage and Collaborate Within a Community of Practice- Teachers
collaborate with colleagues in the field to provide their kids with the best
programming, instruction, and advocacy possible. They also continue their
professional education.

7. Choose three (3) of the principles of language learning and illustrate how you
would use or apply these in teaching
Know Your Learners – Teachers gain information about their learners.
Teachers collect information about their students’ linguistic and educational
backgrounds to determine correct placement for students. They also seek to learn a
new student’s cultural and geographic background as a resource for classroom
learning.
Ensure that all district curriculum include information on educating linguistically
and culturally diverse children. Ensure that students of all proficiency levels have
access to district curriculum, since they will include resources and techniques that are
specifically developed for English learners of all levels—from beginners to advanced.
Create Conditions for Language Learning
 Home visits are a great way to get to know the families at your school. You
may either accompany teachers or other school employees on these trips,
or you can urge them to do so. You may have better success engaging
families by meeting them outside of school, such as in community centers
or at their homes (Louie & Knuth, 2016).
 Make sure that all staff members who interact with English learners and
their families learn about, acknowledge, and affirm the strengths,
capabilities, and contributions made by English learners and their families
to your school.
Engage and Collaborate Within a Community of Practice
Become more engaged in your profession.
 Participate in continuous learning and ongoing professional development
 Join a professional English teaching organization like TESOL International
Association
 Attend local and global conferences, like the annual TESOL International
Convention & English Language Expo
 Participate in online discussions (join the myTESOL Lounge, a free online
community)
 Develop leadership skills so you can be a resource at school and offer
professional development workshops or act as a peer coach to a colleague.
