B. Language Arts- - were formerly described as the study of the four modes
of language: listening, talking, reading, and writing; however, the National
Council of English Teachers and the International Reading Association
recommended two more language arts: seeing and visually portraying, a
decade ago.
7. Choose three (3) of the principles of language learning and illustrate how you
would use or apply these in teaching
Know Your Learners – Teachers gain information about their learners.
Teachers collect information about their students’ linguistic and educational
backgrounds to determine correct placement for students. They also seek to learn a
new student’s cultural and geographic background as a resource for classroom
learning.
Ensure that all district curriculum include information on educating linguistically
and culturally diverse children. Ensure that students of all proficiency levels have
access to district curriculum, since they will include resources and techniques that are
specifically developed for English learners of all levels—from beginners to advanced.
Create Conditions for Language Learning
Home visits are a great way to get to know the families at your school. You
may either accompany teachers or other school employees on these trips,
or you can urge them to do so. You may have better success engaging
families by meeting them outside of school, such as in community centers
or at their homes (Louie & Knuth, 2016).
Make sure that all staff members who interact with English learners and
their families learn about, acknowledge, and affirm the strengths,
capabilities, and contributions made by English learners and their families
to your school.
Engage and Collaborate Within a Community of Practice
Become more engaged in your profession.
Participate in continuous learning and ongoing professional development
Join a professional English teaching organization like TESOL International
Association
Attend local and global conferences, like the annual TESOL International
Convention & English Language Expo
Participate in online discussions (join the myTESOL Lounge, a free online
community)
Develop leadership skills so you can be a resource at school and offer
professional development workshops or act as a peer coach to a colleague.

Surf the Internet for the structure of the language Arts Curriculum. Download it and
attach it to your activity notebook.
Application
1. How would you use these salient features of the K-12 Curriculum in your language
arts lesson planning? Borrow a language lesson plan from a teacher, or get a sample
from the Internet and identify these features by encircling the part and identifying the
feature. Attach that in your activity notebook. (40 points).
