Complications:

Oropharyngeal Airway
Complications potentially caused by the use of oropharyngeal airways are that it may induce
vomiting which may lead to aspiration. Additionally, it may cause or worsen airway obstruction
if an inappropriately sized airway is used (i.e., too small).

Nasopharyngeal Airway
Complications with nasotracheal intubation include epistaxis, turbinate fracture, intracranial
placement through a basilar skull fracture, and retropharyngeal dissection or laceration. After
successful nasotracheal intubation, patients may develop sinusitis, which can lead to sepsis.

Bag Valve mask

Complications include barotrauma from too much lung inflation and gastric insufflation which
can lead to vomiting and aspiration.

endotracheal tube
Complications that can occur during placement of an endotracheal tube include upper airway
and nasal trauma, tooth avulsion, oral-pharyngeal laceration, laceration or hematoma of the
vocal cords, tracheal laceration, perforation, hypoxemia, and intubation of the esophagus.

Laryngoscope
Complications of laryngoscopy include inadequate ventilation, loss of airway, aspiration,
hypertension (HTN), dysrhythmias, eye trauma, dental trauma, laryngospasm, bronchospasm,
perforation of the airway or esophagus, bleeding, edema, and airway obstruction.

laryngeal mask airway

Complications of LMA are laryngospasm, nausea, vomiting, arytenoid dislocation, vocal cord
paralysis, sore throat, and cough

laryngeal tube
Complications of intubation include damage to the vocal cords, bleeding, tearing or puncturing
of tissue in the chest cavity that can lead to lung collapse, injury to throat or trachea, damage to
dental work or injury to teeth, fluid buildup, and aspiration.

esophageal tracheal tube

Complications that can occur during placement of an esophageal tracheal tube include upper
airway and nasal trauma, tooth avulsion, oral-pharyngeal laceration, laceration or hematoma of
the vocal cords, tracheal laceration, perforation, hypoxemia, and intubation of the esophagus.

Cricothyrotomy
Complications of cricothyrotomy may include the bleeding, incorrect placement, resulting in
possible creation of a false passage through tissue, subcutaneous emphysema, obstruction,
esophageal or mediastinal perforation, aspiration, vocal cord injury, and pneumothorax.

Suctioning
Complications of Suctioning are hypoxia, airway trauma, psychological trauma, pain,
bradycardia, iInfection, and ineffective Suctioning.
