PROC 5820 QA F2 2020 Midterm Question 1

How does the critical path help you as a project manager? Provide a detail answers with
an example.
The project manager uses the critical path to identify the sequence of activities that form the
longest chain based in the time required to complete deliverables for each activity. A project to
install a point to point internet transmitter to supply internet between two islands will require
some activities in the critical path. The activities include preparation of project sites for
installation of antenna, laying of concrete foundation, erection of metallic poles, installation of
electricity and power backups, and installation of point to point internet receivers on poles on
both sides of the island. In this case, if the subcontractor delays the fabrication and installation of
electric poles, then the project completion will delay because it will be impossible to install the
point to point internet receivers.
Can you have more than one critical path?

m
er as
A project can have more than one critical path making it important for project managers to

co
implement effective and efficient task scheduling techniques.

eH w
Can a critical path change?

o.
rs e
Yes. Potentially unmitigated risks and natural occurrences can result in a change in the pre
ou urc
estimated durations to complete project activities. Also, issues linked to resource scheduling and
scope changes are likely to result in a change in the critical path.
