Customer complaints about too high lubricating oil consumption

The following change(s) has(have) necessitated this documentation:

● Correction

General
Customers sometimes discover an allegedly too high lubricating oil consumption of their en-
gines. A procedure is described below which the service partner and the customer must fol-
low to determine a possibly increased lubricating oil consumption (see also TR 0199-99-
1142). Here it is necessary to measure and document the consumption of lubricating oil and
fuel over a certain period of time. Only then can remedial measures be taken if necessary.
A new or generally overhauled engine may use more lubricating oil than an engine which
is already run in. The normal lubricating oil consumption can only be estimated correctly af-
ter approx. 500 to 700 operating hours when the piston rings in the cylinder have been run
in.
The lubricating oil quality can play a decisive role in addition to the engine-related lubricat-
ing oil consumption. Especially for engines with a high performance and a high thermal load
it is recommendable to use lubricating oil qualities of the DEUTZ lubricating oil quality class
DQC III or DQC IV and DQC III LA or DQC IV LA because the formulas of these lurbicating
oils are based on high quality base oils and are much more stable in their evaporation be-
haviour. The appropriate DEUTZ are available through Sales. See also Technical Bulletin
0199-99-3002.

Determination of the lubricating oil and fuel consumption

If too high a lubricating oil consumption is suspected or a customer has complained, the
engine owner must measure the lubricating oil and fuel consumption over a peiod of at least
100 operating hours and document this in the forms enclosed with Technical Bulletin 0199-
99-1142.
After submitting the forms filled in completely by the engine owner, the DEUTZ service part-
ner will then work out the specific lubricating oil consumption and the percentage utilisation
(see also examples).

The limit value for the maximum specific lubricating oil consumption is 0.75 %.

Proceed as follows when the limit is exceeded:

● Check engine and parts for lubricating oil leaks

● Checking crankcase pressure
– at high no-load
– in full load operation
See also:
– Service Bulletin
0199-01-9521
● Check mounting of the turbocharger
● Check intake tract/ charge air pipe for lubricating oil
● Take a sample of the lubricating oil
See also:
– Technical Bulletin
0199-99-1187
● Take a fuel sample

Procedure

● In case of customer complaints about too high a lubricating oil consumption, the
DEUTZ service partner must send the Technical Bulletin 0199-99-1142 to the engine
owner (fax/e-mail).
● The engine owner must measure the lubricating oil and fuel comsumption over a period
of at least 100 operating hours and document this in the forms enclosed with the Tech-
nical Bulletin 0199-99-1142.
● The engine owner should send the completed form to his reponsible DEUTZ service
partner.
● The DEUTZ service partner must compute the results (specific percentage lubricating
oil consumption and load) and send them to the following e-mail address on exceeding
the maximum limit:
service-kompaktmotoren.de@deutz.com
● The further procedure will be decided after submitting the data.
