Rationale and Background

The purpose of this unit is for students to master skills used to tell time and to learn how to tell time.

Students should experience this unit because they will engage in hands on activities and lessons that allow them to

relate time to their personal lives and teach them how to tell time so when they leave 3rd grade, they will master the

concept of telling time. Students need to learn telling time because it is a basic life skill that is an essential, crucial

necessity in order to live in the world. Not only do our day to day lives revolve around time, but time is a scientific

conception of living on Earth and how Earth operates. Students are familiar with telling time in so many ways.

Through their home lives, they hear about time from people they live with and interact with outside of school. They

see clocks all around their environment daily. They are also familiar with time in their school day. We talk about

what time it is multiple times throughout the day, and we talk about what time we transition between subjects and

activities. They are also familiar with this unit because they started to learn the basics of telling time in 2 nd grade.

This unit is relevant to students’ lives and interests because not only is time completely relevant to individuals and

the world, but the unit is made up of different lessons that connect to students’ backgrounds and personal lives.
