INTERNSHIP
EXPERIENCES
2020-21
(56th batch)
FOREWARD
Greetings!
The Consult Club of IIM Calcutta is excited to present the first edition of the Internship Experiences Handbook. While a lot of focus of the students interested in
management consulting is naturally on case prep, we believe that insight and inquiry into what actually happens during the consulting internship can help
candidates make more informed choices before summer placements.
The handbook is a compendium of the experiences of students of the 56th batch, who interned with various consulting firms this past summer. Everything from
the project type, day-to-day responsibilities to do’s and don’ts has been covered, all straight from the horses’ (or in this case, students’) mouths.
On that note, we would like to sincerely thank all the students who took the time out to share their experience with us and help to make this document richer -
the time that you spared can hopefully go on to help someone make better choices.
We hope you find this handbook interesting and insightful in equal measure. The internship is an important evaluation tool not only for the firms, but also for
candidates. We have endeavoured to make your work easier in that regard.
Regards,
Consult Club, 2020-21

Project Management Office (PMO) Framework based contractor capability transformation for an Indian mining giant to identify areas of operational
improvement in order to increase performance levels. Client had 25 odd vendors and the aim of the project was to develop an official score card for
each in order to create baseline for performance and improvement measurement. The framework has 4 primary KPI verticals with several sub KPIs.
Brief About the Project
The scope was the intern was to develop above mentioned scorecards for all the available vendors within the purview of the project and
independently lead one of the 4 primary verticals. Other key deliverables included CXO level presentation decks, dynamic planning tool creation and
automated scorecard dashboard making.
1. Statistical Knowledge - Operations projects are usually very analytics/calculation intensive involving a lot of estimations and clustering techniques.
Thus stats knowledge is important
2. Industry Knowledge - I was given time to study and understand the client industry and regularly evaluated on my progress. My manager evaluated

be able to deliver complex dashboards within rigid deadlines
4. Learning Capacity - Since I was expected to lead one of the verticals, my manager expected me to have a steep learning curve and perform with
immediate results
Orientation was decently well. The onboarding team had planned loads of activities and sessions

Tableau was new to me. So, I had to ramp up while doing my deliverables

Do's
1. Learn Excel shortcuts beforehand - Have a basic idea about all excel functions and use cases - try to create a dashboard before your joining
as that will help you acclimatize
2. PPT making is important - especially for reviews - Choose a template from examples on google and recreate that. For color schemes you
can use different sites (www.coolors.com). You can get icons at flaticons.com.
3. Talk with your co-interns/college seniors/buddies in the company - It is easier if you have someone looking out for you and helping you in
situations
4. Try to take initiatives in creating work - do not just wait to get your daily share of work
Do's & Don'ts
Don'ts
1. Do not try to be a mediator between HR and project teams and let them sort out issues amongst themselves - you might end up in
between a tug of war
2. Try to stick to the official theme/design of deliverables and not deviate too much in terms of design - this reduces reworks
3. Do not assume things from your end - Clarify in case you have doubts by asking a lot of questions
4. Do not send deliverables without supporting documents for your work/calculation - it is easier to discuss if you have
calculations/methodologies on display during presentations

Use case in project -
It's slightly rigorous as compared to the other top consulting firms. But the learning is proportionate to the rigor. The key takeaway for anyone
interning in this firm is that they should be quick in judging their case team and the general working styles and adapt to them. Additionally,
Do's & Don'ts one should leverage the presence of IIM C alums, who are more than willing to help. Once work starts, just be very clear on the expectations
and the deadlines. Keep the project manager in loop always and try to go a step ahead of the expectations. Speak up your concerns regarding
anything with your managers and mentors.
