Helen Adams Keller was born a healthy child in Tuscumbia, Alabama, U.S. on June27, 1880.
When she was 19 months, she suffered an illness which could possibly have been scarlet
fever or meningitis. Helen became deaf and blind. Her family went through a lot pain because
it was not easy to communicate with her. Then, Keller’s family contacted a tutor called Anne
Sullivan. She developed a special system which helped Helen to read and write and so she
was able to start school. In 1888 she entered the Cambridge School for Young Ladies to
prepare for Radcliffe College. She entered Radcliffe in the fall of 1900 and received her
Bachelor of Arts degree in 1904. Throughout these years and until her own death in 1936,
Anne Sullivan was always by Helen’s side.
She spent much of her time writing and giving conferences most frequently on blindness,
deafness, socialism, social issues, and women’s rights. She won many prizes and was
honored by the Sorbonne in Paris because of her contribution to these topics. Helen Keller
