History of Athletics
Athletic contests in running, walking, jumping, and throwing are among the
oldest of all sports and their roots are prehistoric. Athletics is in five disciplines: track
and field, road running, race walking, cross country running, and mountain running.
All forms of athletics are individual sports with the exception of relay races.
The first recorded athletic event is the ancient Olympic Games in 776 BC in
Olympia, Greece with only one event--the stadium footrace with Koroibos as the
first Olympic winner.
Running competitions were added in the Ancient Olympic Pentathlon, with the
four main events: the long jump, javelin throw, discus throw, and stadium
footrace.
Athletic events were always held and later became known to Rome in 200 BC.
The Celtics were the first in the stone put and weight throw competition during
the Middle Ages, which we now know as shot put and hammer throw events,
while during the 18th century Northern Europeans popularized the pole vault.
The 19th century showed modern Athletics competition in the military, schools,
and sport clubs. Hurdling competitions were started with the first national
associations, established the Amateur Athletics Association (AAA) of England,
and followed by US in 1876 where the first Outdoor Track and Field
championship was organized by the New York Athletics club.
With amateurism as its founding principles, The International Amateur Athletic
Federations (IAAF) was established as its governing body in 1912. In 1919, the
South American Championships was held followed by the European Athletics
championships in 1934. The first participation of women in the Summer
Olympics was held in 1926 and major athletics competitions for disabled athletes
were introduced in the 1960 Summer Paralympics.
From 1960 onward, Athletics gained mileage through television and after half a
century, the amateur grew to professional status in the late 1970’s. The IAAF
was changed into the International Association of Athletics Federation. World
Championships in Athletics--the first ever global competition for athletes, started
to give prize money for champions in 1997. In 2010, the IAAF World
Championships in Athletics was replaced by IAAF Diamond League composed
of leaders from Europe, Asia, North America, and the Middle East.

I. Track Events
A. Running- is the first classification in the track and field events and is usually
done in an oval track measuring 400 meters with 6-8 lanes having a standard
width of 1.22 meters.

Hurdling- is also included in the running events. It is a foot race over obstacles
called hurdles. While going over the hurdles, you must remain in your assigned lane
throughout the race. If you knock a hurdle down while jumping over them, you may
do so only with a leg or a foot. This event will develop your speed, flexibility, and
balance.

B. Jumping- is the second classification in the track and field events. It has 2
types: one for length or distance (long jump and triple jump), and another for
height (the high jump and pole vault).
High Jump- It is an event where you try to jump vertically and move your
body over a bar that is across two upright poles, upon which rests a 4 meter
horizontal bar, then landing on your back upon a cushioned mattress.

runway. Plant the pole into a sloping metal box beneath the bar and push yourself
up over the bar.

1kg for women across the field as far as possible.
https://www.google.com/search?q=athletics+throwing+illustrations&tbm
Javelin- You have to combine speed and strength with a javelin, a long
spiked-pole which you have to throw as far as possible across the field.
https://www.google.com/search?q=athletics+throwing+illustrations&tbm
7
Shot Put- It is a solid metal ball weighing 7.25 kg for men and 4 kg for women.
You have to throw the shot with one hand from stationary position from a marked
circle 7 ft. in diameter across the field.

1. Running Events- Running burns body fat and improve cardiovascular health. It
also increases leg strength and stamina.
2. Jumping Events- The long jump, triple jump, high jump, and pole vault are four
jumping events where you will develop speed and the skills for jumping.
3. Throwing Events- The shot put, discus, javelin, and hammer are throwing events
that will help you develop upper body strength as well as speed and
precision.
Track and field teaches you lifelong lessons of commitment and dedication.
Becoming an athlete will help you understand the meaning of work and obtain better
work ethics.
