MID-TERM EXAMINATION, SEMESTER 1 YEAR 2021/2022

Course : Systems Analysis and Design

Department / Semester : S1-SIB / III
Day, Date : Thursday, 14-10-2021
Time / Duration : 13:00 / 120 minutes
Lecturers : Edwin Pramana, Ph.D.
Materials Allowed : Open Book

A. Answer the following questions (30 points)

1. List and briefly describe the skills required from a system analyst.
2. What is the meaning of system decomposition? Give an example.
3. What is a feasibility study? Why should we do a feasibility study? Give examples.
4. What is the meaning of tangible/intangible costs? Give an example for each.
5. Compare and contrast the differences between data modeling and process modeling.
6. What is the meaning of primitive DFD? Give an example.

B. Case Study
1. Critical Path Method (20 points)
Abel owns a medicine company. She sells vitamins and other products. Abel is
developing a new system that would require her staff to be retrained. Given the
information in the following Figure, make a network diagram for her and identify the
critical path. Calculate the earliest expected completion time. Draw the Gantt Chart.

2. Cost-Benefit Analysis (20 points)

Alamo Foods of Sydney wants to introduce a new computer system for its perishable
products warehouse. The projected recurring costs and benefits are as follows:

Year Costs Benefits

1 $30000 $25000
2 $35000 $32000
3 $39000 $40000
4 $42000 $49000
5 $44000 $59000
6 $45000 $70000

One-time development costs were $10,000. Given a discount rate of 8 percent, perform
a cost-benefit analysis on the data for Alamo Foods. Calculate the Return of Investment
and present a Break-Even Analysis.

3. Data Flow Diagram (30 points)

UNDERGRADUATE THESIS PROPOSAL REVIEW SYSTEM

Final year students have to submit an undergraduate thesis proposal to be reviewed
by the lecturers to get approval before starting the work. A lecturer will supervise the
students during the development of the proposal. After the supervisor agrees and signs
the proposal, the student must upload the signed thesis proposal to the web.
Before the upload process, students have to create a user ID and a password. After
that, the student must fill in the student ID, student name, thesis title, and supervisor
name. The department head will then assess the proposals and assign up to five
reviewers (lecturers) to evaluate each proposal. The reviewers will receive an email as a
notification for them to review those proposals. Just like the students, the reviewer
must have a user ID and a password too.
The reviewer will then review the proposals and give a recommendation. There are
four types of recommendation: ACCEPTED, MINOR REVISION, MAJOR REVISION, or
REJECTED. A meeting will be held to conclude the status of those proposals. Students
will be notified via email about the status of their proposal.
Students have to revise the proposals according to the recommendations, except for
the Rejected proposals. After the revision is agreed upon and signed by the supervisor
and the department head, the student must re-upload the revised proposal to the web.
The academic administration department will create a Decree for the student to start
working on the undergraduate thesis.

Develop a complete Data Flow Diagram (DFD) for the above system. If you discover that
the narrative is incomplete, make reasonable explanations to complete the story. Supply
these extra explanations along with the diagrams
