AND WOMEN

SETTINGS: Leonato’s house in Messina, Italy
PLOT: Leonato, the town’s well-respected mayor is busy
preparing for the return of his long-time friend Don Pedro, a
nobleman from Aragon from the war as his daughter, Hero, and
his niece, Beatrice accompany him. The messenger mentioned
that Don Pedro is with his friend soldiers, including a
courageous young man named Claudio, who has earned a lot of
respect during the war. Beatrice approached the messenger and
asked about a soldier named Signor Benedick. Beatrice starts
bashing and ridiculing Benedick, but the messenger defends
him by saying that the soldier is a man of character and
decency. A little while later, Don Pedro finally arrives together
with Claudio, Benedick, and his illegitimate brother, Don John.
Beatrice and Benedick continue where they left off on their
battle of wits while Leonato and Don Pedro talk in private.
Beatrice and Benedick attack each other’s appearance, intellect,
and attitude where again, Benedick was the first one to
withdraw and dismiss their conversation which makes Beatrice
feel good about herself. Claudio timidly asked Benedick about
Hero, confessing that he had already fallen in love with her even
though it’s just his second time seeing her before going to war.
Benedick sarcastically dismisses Hero’s appearance, he said
that she’s short and doesn’t have an appeal. He also mocks
Claudio’s desire to marry and become an inferior husband.
Benedick reveals Claudio’s feelings for Leonato’s daughter,
Hero, and Don Pedro quickly approves of the pair. And because
Don Pedro also learned that Claudio was hesitant whether to
tell his feelings to Hero, he comes up with a plan to help him.
Don Pedro is a close friend of Leonato, so it will be easy for him
to convince the man to give Claudio a chance at the hand of
Hero. At the costume ball that will be held later that night, they
will execute his plan that includes Don Pedro dressing up as
Claudio and declaring his love for Hero. Then, he will talk to
Leonato giving Claudio and Hero enough time to talk. The three
rush off to prepare for the ball, full of hopes and enthusiasm
that their plan will work.
CONFLICT: Claudio's inner struggle about whether or not to
express his love for Hero.

TITLE OF THE PLOT: The Masquerade Ball

SETTINGS: A night at the masked ball in a mansion
PLOT: Beatrice talks to her family about how she never wanted to get
married while they wait for the ball to begin. She discusses the perfect and
ideal husband to Hero. She describes 'him' as cheerful as Benedick and as
serious as Don Pedro which is hard to find. As soon as the music starts, the

Summary:
At the conclusion of the war, Leonato throws a masquerade ball for all of
his friends and family to attend. Claudio and Hero plan their wedding while
at the ball. As a result, Don John, Don Pedro's nasty and petty brother, tries
to sabotage the general good mood. Borachio and Conrad, two of Don
John's troops, conspire to fool Claudio into thinking that Hero has cheated
on him.
Literary Theory:
Act 2, Scene 2 contains feminist criticism in which some characters
humiliate a woman by implying that losing her virginity before marriage will

PLOT
Introduction
The Messina town cops also known as Watch,
meet on the street that is outside the house of Leonato
to plan their night duties. Dogberry and Verges manage
and command them of what they are going to do. It
seems like Dogberry and Verge are dedicated to their
professions but they are also hilarious. Under Dogberry
the Watch is very polite but not effective at deterring
crime. They are assigning them to do some small work.
Like they are just telling the drunk men to go home and
sleep but when they refuse to listen the Watch will
ignore them. Dogberry give his men a one last task and
that is to be extra cautious near Leonato’s house
because Hero the daughter of Leonato is getting
married the next day. After that Dogberry and Verges
left, after they left the Watch sit on the bench and
started to sleep.
Rising Action
Borachio and Conrad, Don John associates
arrive and abruptly stop the watchmen. While Borachio
made love with Margaret the Hero’s waiting maid at the
window of Hero’s room and follow the plan he had with
Don John, Margaret was dressed using Hero’s clothes.
Don Pedro and Claudio, who were hiding nearby with
Don John, witnessed the incident and believe that Hero
betrayed Claudio. Claudio felt deceived and
heartbroken, he is determined to get vengeance on
Hero by publicly humiliating her the next day during
their wedding ceremony.
Climax
The watchmen who had been listening to them
appear and arrest Borachio and Conrade for treason
and take them to Dogberry and Verges for questioning.
Borachio list some reasons that may take deception of
Claudio and Don Pedro more understandable. Borachio
suggest that they should blamed Don John’s promised
which made Don Pedro and Claudio being suspicious of
Hero’s guilt. Without knowing that Borachio lies when he
testified to them about making love with Hero.
Falling Action
On morning of her wedding, Hero gets up early
and order her maid Ursula to make Beatrice. Hero is
ecstatic but she is also nervous for some reason.
Margaret teases Beatrice about her changing
personality, claiming that she wants a spouse too.
Beatrice is irritated but Margaret is sure that she is right.
She continues to tease Beatrice about Benedick.
Claudio and his friend arrive and joined the enormous
wedding party and ready to take Hero to church.
Denouement
Dogberry and Verges catch up with Leonato
and try to talk to him as he prepares to enter the church
for his daughter’s wedding. They explain that they
caught two criminals and they want to question them in
front of him. But Leonato postpone their it because of
the wedding and tell Dogberry and Verges to question
the men themselves and report to him later. As a results
Leonato enters the church and Dogberry and Verges
leave without exposing Don John’s scheme.
Conflict: Claudio was deceived by
Borachio saying that he and Hero has
a relationship

Plot
Introduction: Antonio is giving pieces of
advice to his brother, Leonato. Leonato
doesn’t want to accept his advice. He said
that only man who experience the same
can understand him and he doesn’t want to
be philosophical as he grieve.
Rising Action: Don Pedro and Claudio
went towards them. Don Pedro greeted
them but Leonato seemed upset. Don
Pedro asked who wronged the old man and
the conversation heated.
Climax: Leonato wants to have a duel
with Claudio since he believed that
Hero, his daughter died because they
slandered and falsely accused her.
Claudio doesn’t want to
fight him back. Antonio butted in, he's
more angry than his brother. He told
Claudio that he will have to fight him as well
if he's fighting his brother. As they said
goodbye, Leonato said that he'll avenge his
daughter. Benedick also came, he'd not
willing to show some wits to his cousin
because he's also angry at Claudio. He also
asked for a duel but they didn’t take him
seriously. As Benedick went away, they
realized that he is serious and concluded
that he acted that way because of his love

entered bringing Conrade and
Borachio to Don Pedro. The two
confessed that it is them who plotted
the scheme to slander Hero. Borachio
told them that Don John was behind
all of it. They use Margaret to act as
Hero who has an affair with Borachio.
Leonato and Antonio came back and
found out about it. Leonato insisted
that aside from those plaintiffs,
Claudio and Don Pedro are to blame.
Denouement: Don Pedro and Claudio
accepted the consequences of their
mistakes. Leonato asked Claudio to
tell everyone that he falsely accused
Hero. He needs to prove the lady's
innocence. He also must marry
Antonio's mystery daughter who has a
similarity with Hero.
Conflict: Leonato and Antonio were
furious about Hero's death. They
both want some revenge to save
his daughter's name from belong
slandered by Claudio.
Resolution: Dogberry caught the
plaintiffs and they confessed their
crimes. Don Pedro and Claudio
accepted the consequences of
their false accusations. Hero's
name was cleared and Claudio is
about to marry Antonio's
daughter.

Benedick. Beatrice isn’t an easy lady, but
Benedick is passionate. He told Beatrice that
he challenged Claudio for a duel. They talk
about each other's qualities.
Climax: Ursula came rushing and told Beatrice
that there was a huge chaos going on there.
The plaintiffs were caught but Don John, who
was the Mastermind, happened to escape
already.
Falling Action: Beatrice wants Benedick to
come with her so she asked her immediately.
Denouement: Benedick agreed non-hesitantly
because he promised to stay at Beatrice's side

Beatrice but he doesn’t know how to
create love poems. He asked Margaret for
help but Margaret is hesitant. However, he
just summoned Beatrice. They talked
about what they like from each other until
Ursula came and told Beatrice about the
confession of the plaintiffs who slandered
Hero. They both went to see what’s
happening.

Explanation: It is clearly evident in this
scene how Shakespeare gives emphasis to
the characters of Margaret and Beatrice.
Instead of objectifying them, he penned
the power of female characters through
their wit and strong personality. Also, at
the beginning of the scene there's a
moment where Benedick mentioned
virginity to Margaret. He also asked
Margaret to write love poems which is
somehow stereotypical because girls are
known for it but it doesn’t mean that boys
can’t.

Title of the Plot: The great surprise!
Characters: Leonato, Antonio, Benedick, Beatrice, Ursula,

Setting: Hall in Leonato’s house
Plot:
Expository/Introduction:
In the Hall in Leonato’s house, Leonato talking
with Benedick, Antonio and the Friar are waiting for
Claudio and Don Pedro for the second wedding
ceremony. They are glad that the slanders against Hero
have been disprove, and that Don John has been fled.
That time Benedick asked Leonato if he can marry
Beatrice, but Leonato respond hypocritically, implies
that he needs to do something for Beatrice.
Rising Action:
When Claudio and Don Pedro arrive, Leonato
presents the ladies wearing veil and brought Hero
forward without knowing that Hero is lady behind
the veil.
Climax:
When he asked to unveil her, Leonato told him that
he would have to promise first to marry her, so he
asked her hand told me if she would like to be his
wife.
And Hero removed her veil and told her that if they will
be a husband and wife, they will be a different person
(implying that they not really know they each other, and
they will be more trials to face together) and Claudio
was surprised and happy to realize she’s alive.
Falling Action:
Benedick looked for Beatrice and she
removed veil, He asked if she loves him but
she answered “no more than reason,”
Beatrice asked the same question, also
replied the same. That time they realized
that they have been set up by their relatives
and friends, this revealed they did not love
each other after all. But Claudio and Hero
showed their poems for each other
revealing their true feeling and that,
Benedick kissed Beatrice. Then they played
music and rejoice.
Denouement:
Leonato asked his daughter Hero to wear a
veil to surprise Claudio to marry him. And
Claudio is so surprise and happy.
Point of View: Third person
Theme: Do not marry a stranger or
someone who you really don't know,
because you will be responsible to the
future together
Conflict:
Claudio is decided that he will be
marrying whoever woman presented by
Leonato and expecting that she would be
Antonio’s daughter. A disappointed part
here, he will be marrying a stranger.
Resolution:
Leonato asked his daughter Hero to wear a
veil to surprise Claudio to marry him. And
Claudio is so surprise and happy.
Short Summary
Hero was proven
that she's not
guilty of betrayal
against Claudio,
and it answered
every questions.
Everyone is
preparing for the
second wedding
ceremony for
Claudio and
Benedick, and that
would be the
greatest surprise
for Claudio
because Hero is
alive. In the end,
Claudio married
to Hero while
Benedick married
to Beatrice.
