MATHEMATICS 8
SECOND QUARTER
SY: 2020 – 2021

LESSON 1: RATIONAL EXPRESSIONS, DEFINED

I.OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:

1. define a rational expression; and

2. determine all permissible values of the variables involved in a rational expression.

II. SKILLS DEVELOPMENT:

A. Read pages 35 – 36.( Textbook ) Math for Engaged Learning 8.

 A rational expression or fractional expression is a quotient of two polynomials, say P and Q , of

the form

P , Q ≠ 0.
Q

Examples of rational numbers:

x_ , x2 – 7x + 5 , ____ab – a2____
y x+3 6a2 + 13ab + 5b2

 To determine all permissible values of the variable ( s) involved in a rational expression.

1. Equate the denominator to 0, then

2. Solve for the variable.
Examples:

1. x2 + 3x + 2
x2 – 1

x2 – 1 = 0
( x + 1 ) ( x – 1 ) = 0, factoring
x + 1 = 0 or x – 1 = 0, if the product is 0, at least one of the factors is 0.
This is the Zero Factor Property.
x = -1 or x = 1 , Solving for x by the Addition Property of Equality

Hence, the domain is the set of all real numbers x except – 1 and 1. That is
{ x/x ≠ - 1 and x ≠ 1 }

2. x_____
x + 5x2 + 6x
3

x3 + 5x2 + 6x = 0
x ( x + 2 ) ( x + 3 ) = 0 , Factoring
x = 0 , x = - 2 , or x = - 3 Zero Factor Property and then solving.
