LESSON 4: GEOMETRIC SEQUENCES

I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, the student should be able to:

1. Illustrate, describe, and give examples of harmonic sequence.
2. Find harmonic means.
II. SKILLS DEVELOPMENT:
A. Read pages 37-39 (Textbook) Math for Engaged Learning 10
HARMONIC SEQUENCES
A harmonic sequence is a sequence in which the reciprocals of the terms form
and arithmetic sequences
Example:
1 1 1 1
1. 1 , , , , ,… infinite harmonic sequence because the reciprocals
2 3 4 5
of
the terms form an arithmetic sequence 1,2,3,4,5,…
whose common difference is 1.
1 1 1 1 1 1
2. , , , , , ,… infinite harmonic sequence because the reciprocals
5 9 13 17 21 25
of
the terms form an arithmetic sequence
5,7,13,17,21,25,… whose common difference is 4.
1 2 3 4 2 n
3. , , , , ,…, … not harmonic sequence because the reciprocals of
2 3 4 5 5 n+ 1
the
the terms do not form an arithmetic sequence.
1
4. Write the first five terms of the sequence whose nth term is . Is the sequence
11−3 n
is harmonic?
Solution:
1
Replace n in with 1,2,3,4, and 5.
11−3 n
1 1 1 1 1 1 1
= = = =−1
11−3 (1) 8 11−3 (2) 5 11−3 (3) 2 11−3 (4)

1 −1

11−3 (5) 4
1 1 1 1
The sequence is , , ,−1 ,− . It is a harmonic sequence.
8 5 2 4
6 6
5. Find the 14th term of the sequence ,1, ,…
5 7
Solution:
5 7
The reciprocals of the terms of the given sequence are , 1 , , … which form an

arithmetic sequence with first term a 1= and a common difference (d )= .
6 6
Find the 14th term using the formula a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d
5 1
a 14= + ( 14−1 )
6 6
5 1
a 14= + ( 1 3 )
6 6
5 13 18
a 14= + = =3

6. What is n if a n is− of the harmonic sequence , , , ,…
26 10 8 6 41
Solution:
The corresponding harmonic sequence is 10, 8, 6, 5, …
Let a n=−26
a 1=10
d=−2
Using the formula a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d
10+ ( n−1 ) d=−26
10+ ( n−1 ) (−2)=−26
10−2n+ 2=−26
−2 n=−26−10−2
−2 n=−38
n=19
−1
Hence, is the 19th term of the harmonic sequence.

7. Insert four harmonic means between 3 .
13
Solution:
There will be six terms in the series after the four harmonic means are inserted.
3 13
In the corresponding arithmetic sequence, a 1= and a n= . solving for d.
2 2
a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d
13 3
= + ( 6−1 ) d
2 2
13 3
= +5 d
2 2
13 3
5 d= −
2 2
10
5 d= 5 d=5 d=1
2
3 5 7 9 11 ,∧13
Thus, the arithmetic sequence is , , , , . Since by definition, the
2 2 2 2 2 2
terms
of harmonic sequence are the reciprocals of the respective terms of an arithmetic
2 2 2 2 2 ,∧2
sequence, then the terms of the harmonic sequence are , , , , .
