FIRST QUARTER
S.Y: 2020 – 2021

LESSON 1: SEQUENCES

I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, the student should be able to:

1. Generates Pattern;
2. Define a sequence; and
3. Determine what constitutes a sequence.
II. SKILLS DEVELOPMENT:
A. Read pages 5-10 (Textbook) Math for Engaged Learning 10
SEQUENCES
The world is full of patterns. These patterns are used to describe the world around us.
Many situations in the field of science and Mathematics are best described by using a
special type of function called sequence.
Sequences are important in our daily live as well as in higher Mathematics. For
example, the arrangement of the planets in the solar system, the shape of the leaves and
flowers, minute in an hour, squares of numbers, growth of bacteria, months in a year,
days in week and others.
A sequence is a function whose domain is set of consecutive positive integers
beginning with 1.
An infinite sequence is one whose domain is the set of all positive integers {1,2,3, …}.
A sequence is finite if its domain is the set of all positive integers less than or equal to
some fixed positive integer.
For example, the first 5 terms of the sequence whose general term is a ( n )=n2 are

a ( 1 )=12 =1, a ( 2 )=22=4 , a ( 3 )=32=9 , a ( 4 ) =4 2=16 , a ( 5 )=5 2=25. You can list the sequence as:
1,4,9,16,25, …
The notation a n is the same as the functional notation a ( n ) , but is used more

commonly. Hence, a ( 1 )=a1 ,a ( 2 ) =a2 , and so on.

EXAMPLE 1.
Let a n=5 n+2 represent the nth term of a sequence. Find the first three terms,
the 12th term, and the 20th term.
SOLUTION:
a 1=5 (1 )+2=7
a 2=5 ( 2 )+ 2=12
a 3=5 ( 3 ) +2=17
a 12=5 ( 12 ) +2=62
a 20=5 (20 )+ 2=102

EXAMPLE 2.
Look at the sequence below and predict the general term.
3,6,9,12,15, …
SOLUTION:
In Example 2, multiples of 3, the terms can be identified as follows
First term: a 1=3 (1 )=3
Second term: a 2=3 ( 2 )=6
Third term: a 3=3 ( 3 )=9
Fourth term: a 4=3 ( 4 )=12
Fifth term: a 5=3 ( 5 )=15

• •
• •
General Term: a n=3 ( n )=3 n
The sequence 3,6,9,12,15 can be used to find the partial sum.
S5=3+ 6+9+12+15
S5=45 , the sum if the first five terms.

This concept of getting the sum of terms can be expressed in a simpler manner using
the summation notation, denoted by the Greek letter Σ sigma. This can be used to indicate
the
m
the sum of terms in a sequence. ∑ an=a1+ a2 +a3 + a4 +a 5+ …+am
n =1
Write the sum of the following summation notation:

1. Evaluate
6

∑ 3n
n =1

First, we form the notation as a sum of the terms of the sequence.

∑ 3 n=3 ( 1 ) +3 ( 2 )+ 3 ( 3 )+3 ( 4 ) +3 ( 5 ) +3( 6)

n =1

∑ 3 n=3+6+ 9+12+15+18=63
n =1

2. Find the sum of the terms in the summation notation.

4

∑ ( 4 n−7 )= [ 4 ( 1 )−7 ]+ [ 4 ( 2 ) −7 ] +[ 4 (3 )−7 ]+ [ 4 ( 4 )−7 ]

n =1

∑ ( 4 n−7 )= (−3 ) +1+5+9=12

n =1
