Transferring to a stretcher or another bed using a draw


sheet or friction reducing device

When transferring clients with hemeparesis, lead with
their strong side.

The transfer
(1) Place the bed flat, and position at the same level as the __ __ __ ___________
stretcher. Lower head of bed as much as client can tolerate.
Cross client’s arms on chest. Ensure that bed brakes are
locked.
(2) Lower the side rails. Have two caregivers stand on the side __ __ __ ___________
where the stretcher will be, while the third caregiver stands
on the other side.
(3) Two caregivers help the client roll onto side toward them __ __ __ ___________
(4) Work together to position the friction-reducing device/ slide __ __ __ ___________
board properly under the client’s back. Gently roll client back
onto the friction-reducing device/slide board. Slide the client
close the edge of the bed.
(5) Align stretcher alongside the bed. Lock the wheels of the __ __ __ ___________
stretcher once it is in place. Instruct the client to place his or
her arms across the chest and not to move.
(6) While standing on the far side of the stretcher, all three __ __ __ ___________

caregivers place feet widely apart with one foot slightly in
front of the other, and grasp the friction-reducing device.
(7) On the count of three, caregivers pull draw sheet or client __ __ __ ___________
from the bed onto the stretcher while third person holds
friction-reducing device/slide board in place. Position client
in centre of stretcher.
(8) Put up the side rail of the stretcher on the side where __ __ __ ___________
caregivers are, and then roll the stretcher away from the
side of the bed and put side rails up on that side.
(9) Assess the client for proper alignment for the sitting position. __ __ __ ___________
(10) Cover the client with a sheet or blanket. __ __ __ ___________
(11) Perform hand hygiene __ __ __ ___________
