Lea the unicorn, a crochet pattern designed by Diminu. 1


Materials
· Yarn (purple, lilac, yellow, green, dark pink, light blue, turquoise and
cream). I used Katia Panama 100% cotton yarn, 50g / 180 m
· 2 mm crochet hook
· Polyester fiberfill
· 4.5 mm plastic safety
eyes
· Embroidery thread
· Tapestry needle
· Stitch marker

Abbreviations
st = stitch
ch= chain stitch
sc = single crochet
inc = increase (2 sc in one st)
dec = decrease (make 2 st into one st)
BLO = insert the hook in the Back Loop Only
sl = slip stitch

Notes
- This pattern is written using US crochet terminology.
- If you use the yarn and hook indicated, the unicorn will be about 15.5 cm
(6.1 inches) tall. You can make it bigger or smaller using another type of
yarn but, please, adapt the crochet hook and safety eyes accordingly.
- Work in continuous rounds unless instructed otherwise in the pattern.

Rnd 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring (6)
Rnd 2: inc in all 6 st (12)
Rnd 3: (1 sc, inc) x 6 (18)
Rnd 4: (2 sc, inc) x 6 (24)
Rnd 5: (3 sc, inc) x 6 (30)
Rnd 6-11: sc in all 30 st (30)
Rnd 12: (4 sc, inc) x 6 (36)
Rnd 13: sc in all 36 st (36)

*Place your safety eyes without


attaching them between rounds 16-
17 with 15 stitches between them.

* Take out the safety eyes and
embroider the eyelashes as shown in
the second picture
* Finally attach the safety eyes.

* Embroider the nostrils with lilac
yarn between rounds 3-4 with
around 3 stitches between them.

* Start stuffing the head and
continue stuffing as you work.

Fasten off leaving a tail for sewing.


With your yarn needle, weave the
yarn tail through the front loop of
each stitch and pull tight to close.
Weave in the yarn end.

EARS (make 2)
(in cream yarn)
Rnd 1: start 5 sc in a magic ring (5)
Rnd 2: sc in all 5 st (5)
Rnd 3: inc in all 5 st (10)
Rnd 4: sc in all 10 st (10)
Rnd 5: (1 sc, inc) x 5 (15)
Rnd 6: sc in all 15 st (15)
Rnd 7: (2 sc, inc) x 5 (20)
Rnd 8-10: sc in all 20 st (20)
Rnd 11: (2 sc, dec) x 5 (15)
Rnd 12: (1 sc, dec) x 5 (10)
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for
sewing. Fold the ear in half and fix it in
this position with a couple of stitches.
Don’t stuff it.

HORN
(in yellow yarn)

Rnd 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring (6)


Rnd 2: sc in all 6 st (6)
Rnd 3: (1 sc, inc) x 3 (9)
Rnd 4-5: sc in all 9 st (9)
Rnd 6: (2 sc, inc) x 3 (12)
Rnd 7-8: sc in all 12 st (12)
Rnd 9: (3 sc, inc) x 3 (15)

Make a slip stitch in next stitch and fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Stuff
it.

BODY

Stuff if, not completely, only the hand
(lilac part).

Rnd 22: Flatten the top of the arm and


make sc through both layers to close.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

LEGS (make 2)
(Start with lilac yarn)
Rnd 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring (6)
Rnd 2: inc in all 6 st (12)
Rnd 3: (1 sc, inc) x 6 (18)
Rnd 4: (2 sc, inc) x 6 (24)
Rnd 5: (3 sc, inc) x 6 (30)
Rnd 6: BLO sc in all 30 st (30)
Rnd 7: (3 sc, dec) x 6 (24)
Rnd 8: sc in all 18 st (24)
Rnd 9: (2 sc, dec) x 6 (18)

Change to cream yarn


Rnd 10: sc in all 18 st (18)
Rnd 11: (1 sc, dec) x 6 (12)
Rnd 12-22: sc in all 12 st (12)
Stuff it, leaving the last part empty
(about 1 cm / 0.3 inches without
stuffing).
Rnd 23: Flatten the top of the leg and
make sc through both layers to close.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for


sewing.

MANE
I have used 6 different yarn colors: green, yellow, dark pink, purple, light blue and
turquoise. We will make in total 18 pieces to make the mane, 12 large pieces and
6 small pieces.

Large pieces
Make 2 of each color (12 in
total):
Rnd 1: ch 26
Rnd 2: start in second chain
from hook. sc stitch in all 25 st
(25)
Fasten off leaving a long tail
for sewing.

Small pieces
Make 1 of each color (6 in
total):
Rnd 1: ch 17
Rnd 2: start in second chain
from hook. sc stitch in all 16 st
(16)

TAIL
We will use the same 6 colors to make the tail: green, yellow, dark pink, purple,
light blue and turquoise. We will make in total 6 pieces.

Make 1 of each color (6 in


total):
Rnd 1: ch 17
Rnd 2: start in second chain
from hook. sc stitch in all 16 st
(16)
Fasten off leaving a long tail for
sewing.

Assembly

Follow these step by steps


instructions to sew all parts
together:

- Pin the ears to the head between rounds 25-28 leaving 12 stitches between
them and sew them to the head.

- Pin the horn centered to the head between rounds 20-25 and sew it to the
head.

- Place the body centered under the head with pins. Place it between round
16 counting from the magic ring and in round 10 from the last round. Use
the pictures as a reference.

- Sew the arms to both sides of the body 2 rows below the head.

- Pin the legs to the body as shown in the photos and sew them to the body.

- Now we will start sewing the mane to the head. Sew the largest pieces (ch
26) to the head as shown in the pictures, add a pair of stitches to fix them to
the head.

- Now we will continue sewing
the small pieces (ch 17). Sew
them to the head as shown in
the pictures adding a pair of
stitches to fix them.

- Now sew the remaining 6 small pieces (ch 17) to the body around round 4-6
to make the tail.

- Finally you can add a little bit of make up blush to the cheeks (optional)
