2.1. Horizontal finishing mill
Purpose: Rolling the stock from intermediate mills to finishing mills.
Type: 2-Hi horizontal housing less stands.
Quantity: 6 sets(11H,12H,14H,15H ,16H,17H)
Comprising:
The mill is made up of: 2-Hi housing less stands, cross joint type universal spindle,
universal spindle support, base plate fittings, lock device, hardened gear tooth
combined gearbox and main drive motor.
Characteristics of horizontal stand
Consisting of: mill stand, mill base frame, mill rail holder, mill locking cylinder, shifting
cylinder, spindle support, universal spindle, etc. combined reducer is adopted driven
individually with one set of AC motor.
1) Stand
The mill is housing less type, with tie rod connected short stress line structure,
consisting of roll assembly and screw down mechanism, etc.
Roll assembly:
Roll adopts 4-row cylindrical roller bearing for radial force and thrust bearing for axial
force. The top and bottom chocks are provided with spring balancing device to balance
the weight of roll assembly and eliminate the screw gap between screw down nut and

tie rod. The top roll operation side is provided with worm – gear set mechanism to
axially move the top roll to realize axial adjustment of roll to align with groove. The roll
bearing adopts double sealing as sealing ring and mechanical labyrinth sealing. The
four chocks for fixing top and bottom rolls are connected together with four rigid tie
rods and four supports, and spherical pad is provided on the bearing surface between
tie rod and chock. In case roll is bent, the spherical pad will enable rotation of chock
related to the tie rod to realize automatic self aligning so that the roll bear uniform
force to extend life time.
Screw down: it is installed at top of the four tie rods of roll assembly, and worm set,
gear set mechanism are adopted for rotating the four tie rods. Both ends are provided
with tie rods with left and right threads which realize the top and bottom roll
symmetrical adjustment jointly with the screw down nut in the chock. The screw down
mechanism can separately adjust the roll opening of one side through clutch
mechanism, and roll opening at both sides can be adjusted synchronously. One side of
screw down mechanism can be actuated by hydraulic motor for quick adjustment, and
the other side can be manually fine adjusted. The screw down extent is indicated with
scale mark. The quick joint of hydraulic motor adopts thread high pressure quick
change method.
Roll assembly together with screw down mechanism is called mill stand.
2) Mill base frame and guide support
Mill base frame is of welded rigid frame for supporting the mill stand. It is installed on
the rail holder of mill. The mill proper is placed on base frame through four supports.
The entry and exit of mill stand are arranged with guide support for installing roll guide.
The guide holder is of dove tail shape, and support is shifted with manual screw
mechanism for aligning with roll groove, lined with wearing plate.
3) Mill rail holder
The mill proper and spindle support are installed on the same rail holder. The rail
holder is of welded steel structure,lined with wearing resistant plate (Material will be
16Mn). The rail holder of mill is also assembled with mill shifting mechanism and mill
locking mechanism. The mill locking cylinder adopts spring locking and hydraulic

opening.
4) Mill main drive
The main motor of mill adopts AC motor, and it is connected with reducer through
drum type toothed coupling.
5) Combined reducer:
Transmitting torque of motor to mill, at the same times, changing the motor speed to
required rolling speed.

➢ At each gearbox entry side will be set with ball valve, filter strainer, flow swich,
pressure switch, and indicator.
➢ lubrication of gear and bearings by means of oil circulation inside the housing

➢ Coupling and base plate for the motor drive
➢ Gear material : 17CrNiMo6, Carburizing and hardening treatment
➢ Gear with hardening surface teeth with processing accuracy of Class UNI6
(AGMA10).
➢ Big gear shall be close fit + key.
➢ Input and output coupling adaptor will be conical-key mounted.
➢ Mechanical seal (labyrinth seal) will be used.
➢ Each output shaft the calculation: Tmax*50%*3 (Tmax: Maximum Rolling
Torque).
➢ Gear box Torque overload calculation will be 2 times of motor Torque.
➢ Normalization heat treatment will be performed on gear body.
6) Drive spindle and spindle support

Drive spindle is used between mill and reducer for transmission of rolling torque. The
spindle can be retracted. The drive spindle is provided with spindle support under for
balancing weight of universal spindle so as to eliminate the additional load of spindle
to the bearing at roll drive side and realize uniform force bearing of roll balancing
device. Another main function of spindle support is to support the drive spindle while
changing stands proper. One end of spindle support is connected with mill base frame
locked with pin cylinder, and the other end is connected with joint of shifting cylinder,
and it can be moved on rail holder with push-pull of hydraulic cylinder.
7) Stand movement
Stand shifting is actuated with hydraulic cylinder. The hydraulic cylinder actuates the
spindle support for movement, and the stand proper and spindle proper are engaged
and disengaged with pin cylinder, and individual operation is possible. While changing
pass, both can be shifted together.
Stand base frame is locked with disc spring and released hydraulically.
The stand shifting cylinder is also used for roll change. The shifting cylinder pulls the
stand proper to drive side, and pin is pulled out so that the stand proper and spindle
support are disengaged, and the spindle support and spindle are kept intact. Hydraulic
cylinder pushes stand proper to operation side so that spindle is disconnected from
roll, and after that used and new stands can be exchanged with crane.

The configuration and parameter of the vertical stand is almost same to horizontal
stand mentioned above. Only difference lies in that one set stand changing car will
be provided and rolling stand lift device will lowering the stand on the car when
rolling changing and then the car will be pushed off the rolling line for further roll
handling.
The vertical stand will use the same cartridge to horizontal mill.
The lift device on the base plate of vertical mill will be used for changing pass groove
and stand use. Mill stand is fastness fixed on the base plate by locked cylinder. When
changing grooves, open the locked cylinder first, then the lift device will push mill
stand moving.
This vertical mill adopting top driving, avoiding cooling water and iron scale entering
into driving system.
Support of vertical mill: concrete structure.( The upper platform and support column
of vertical mill can also be used steel structure, the disadvantage is that the vibration
and noise will be bigger.)

will be stored for stocks between adjacent stands under tension-less condition as buffer
for the situation being out of coordination of speed between stands so as to eliminate
stock size fluctuation due to dynamic speed variation between stands during rolling
process.

Equipment compositions: looping roll, carrying roll and pneumatic cylinder, etc.
Structure feature: the looping roll is installed on swing frame, and it is directly lifted and
lowered with the quick action of pneumatic cylinder to form loop of stock in time. The
loop frame is provided with guide which facilitates the passage of stock, with 7 for
finishing mill, including 2 online loops for realizing split rolling.

Equipment structure: the roll change device is of welded structural part. The carriage for
accommodating stand is of cross arrangement with the fixed frame for accommodating
roll, and both are actuated with hydraulic cylinder. Stand is placed on roll change frame,
and the shaft shoulder collar of stand is clamped on the fixed frame of roll. Firstly the
connections at left and right chocks are disconnected, and then the retaining members
at the fixed end and free end of roll are removed, hydraulic cylinder pushes stand
carriage, chock and other components at two sides of stand together with the screw
down worm-gear box on it are removed from roll at two sides, and the used roll is kept
at the roll fixed frame; the fixed frame has two rows, and new roll is placed on the other
row; hydraulic cylinder pushes the used roll off the mill stand, new roll is pushed into
mill stand, and then hydraulic cylinder inserts new roll into mill stand to complete roll
change. Stands of different models use different support frame.
