Pardo, Peter Carl M.

2-B

09/28/20
I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of this exercise, students must be able to:

a) Identify problem worth solving for the customer.

b) Solve and come up with ideas to address problem.
c) Empathize with the customer to identify their problem.

II. CLASSROOM ACTIVITY

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. You will complete this activity with your group.

2. You will go out of the classroom, observe people, talk to them, and come back in 20
minutes.
3. Use the questions below to record your observations.
4. If you need more clarity on how to answer these questions, refer to the sample
questionnaire given.
5. You have 45 minutes to complete this activity.
6. Group leaders should pass this activity in their Canvas account.
7. Upon submission and obtaining a passing grade each group will have 5 minutes to
present their activity as their Summative Assessment.

III. QUESTION AND ANSWER

Use the following questions to record your observations:

1. Go out, look around you, and identify a problem that you can spot. Explain the context as well.

The problem that we chose to solve is the alarming rate of house pets that have gone missing.
This problem exists not only in the Philippines but in the whole world, but we will focus more
on the Philippines. If you look it up on Facebook, there are a lot of pet parents who posts about
their pets that are either lost or stolen. Some of them are lucky because they find their pets, but
many are not. And it is not the owner's fault because you cannot and should not held your pets
captive at home. They should be able to roam free. There are available options to solve this
problem. One is a GPS tracker for pets, but the problem is it is not widely recognized here in the
Philippines and, it is expensive. Those who are privileged are the ones who can afford this
option. Our plan is to make these trackers accessible and cheap for all pet lovers here in the
Philippines.
2. What opportunity can you perceive from the above problem?

Upon observing that the rate of house pets has gone missing, we will be able to use this
opportunity to come up with ideas that will be able to solve this specific kind of problem that
will prevent or avoid house pets from leaving their homes undetected.

3. Who is the Customer?

Based on the idea of preventing or being able to track house pets if they were able to leave
their homes, our primary customers will mostly be families or individuals who are worried of
their pets missing or are having trouble keeping their pets contained inside their homes.

4. What according to the customer are the main problems?

According to our observations, some of the problems perceived were troublesome pets having
tendencies to go outside of their homes without their guardians, pet owners who sometimes
accidentally let go of the leashes of their pets while taking a walk, and families who are just
simply worried of the possible chances of having their pets go missing.

5. What is the job to be done?

Equipping pets with GPS collars will likely decrease the increasing rate of lost pets. GPS
equipped pets, who are missing, will be tracked by their owners through their smartphones in
real-time.

6. What job is currently getting done?

Lost house pets are either hiding somewhere else or they are being kept or adopted
temporarily by some strangers in case the owner is finding them, or they are caught and
sheltered by LGOs or NGOs who are permitted and licensed to do animal care and
rehabilitation like PAWS (Philippine Animal Welfare Society).

7. How is the customer getting the job done today OR how is the customer addressing this
problem today?

They either search around the common places their pets are most likely to stay-in, contact
community animal control agencies and shelters, use social media sites like Facebook to
inquire about their lost pet and post flyers within the city radius.

8. Estimate the market size. Your assumption will do.

Estimated market size will be small (hundreds or thousands) at first since GPS trackers for
pets are not widely recognized locally. For these GPS trackers to be recognized, I would
suggest that we introduce these to known or government owned animal shelters and
impounds. These shelters have a wide reach that will helps us expand the use of GPS trackers
to pet owners and other individuals.

9. Does this seem to be a problem worth solving? Explain.

One reason why this problem is worth solving is because it keeps on happening even though
there are many provided solutions from the past. Another reason is because it would save
lives - people and animals since stray animals could endanger people's lives and vice versa.
Many owners have trailed the streets for hours or relied on other individuals to locate their
lost pets. It would be a struggle since they do not know if they are looking at the right
direction. Although, some pets such as dogs and cats have a great deal of homing instinct,
they can become disoriented, causing them stress and anxiety, so the quicker you find them,
the better it is for both of you in terms of emotional upset. A distressed pet will frequently
hide themselves due to fear of the unknown, so with our solution, a GPS tracker, you can find
them quickly and easily.

NOTE: If you think that this is not a problem worth solving, then you should look for
another problem that you can solve.
