Simple, compound, complex, compound-complex


Sentences are categorized according to the number and type of clauses they contain. The types
are simple, compound, complex, compound-complex. We need to learn this because for many
reasons.
-Variety: Varying sentence patterns to avoid boring sentences for your readers.
-Emphasis: emphasizes your sentence patterns to make your idea stronger
-Grammar: watch your grammar to avoid misunderstanding meaning.
Sentences patterns:
- Simple sentence contains only one main clause (SV, VS, SSV, VVS, SSVV, SVV) no
subordinate clauses
- Compound sentence contains two or more main clauses that are joined by a comma and a
coordinating junction (FANBOYS) or a semicolon (;) or a semicolon and a transitional word or
phrase
- Complex sentence contains only one main clause and one or more subordinate clauses
- Compound-complex sentence contains two or more main clauses and one or more subordinate
clauses.

stringy/wobbly sentences: A stringy sentence is a sentence that is usually difficult to read and
understand because it has too many clauses, often due to an overuse of coordinating and/or
subordinating conjunctions.
How to avoid it, decide which details are closely related, you can combine details with
conjunctions (such as because, when, while ...) or create dependent clauses or phrases. also, you
can incorporate appositives. sometimes you will need to place details in separate sentences.
