Learnings/ Realizations
As members of the post-modern society, we are global citizens. In this way, we can say
that we are an amalgamation of not just our ancestor’s culture but also a mixture of the culture of
the world. Having all these conflicting ideas and cultures, we might lose ourselves in the process
and in a digital age, this can more than likely happen. One of the ways that we can mitigate this
is to not just practice our faith and spirituality in our day-to-day life but also in our digital
spaces.
Two of the most impactful lessons that I learned that day is to seek to make social media
a space for prayer and to seek to make social an encounter of real people. During this pandemic,
the churches were closed, and mass gatherings were prohibited. Different social media platforms
served a vital role in keeping the faith of the people alive. Masses were held online as well as
different religious activities. This paves the way for the future. Now, spreading the word of God
is not only limited to one-on-one talks but is now making waves in speaking to each individual
that a video reaches on the internet as if they were right beside you. Our faith should not stop
with us, we must also spread it to other people through the means that we are most comfortable
with, which is through social media. Second, whatever is online is also the real world, there is no
distinction. So, we must act as if we are interacting with other people in-person. Whatever words
we post or say to another person has real physical consequences so we have to be careful, and
we should be real human beings and children of God online.
To sum it all up, we are interacting with real people, with real stories online. What
happens online, also translates to our personal live so we must use social media as a tool for us
to reach other people and not let it use us a tool to bring hurt to other people.
