SIHI LPG Solutions throughout the Supply Chain
During the various stages of distribution, pumps are required to transfer LPG in order to compensate the pressure losses
in the flow process. Under normal atmospheric conditions, liquid gases are gaseous. Depending on the temperature at
certain pressures they can be liquefied.

At present, liquefied gasses are produced and used in many forms. They are mainly gasses that comply with DIN 51622
as propane, butane and their mixtures. In order to use them in industry and private homes they have to be stored,
pumped and transported properly.

To meet these standards, the design of the pump is of great importance.

SIHI LPG Summary of Advantages
Self priming capability
Guarantees effective priming in suction lift applications.

Gas and vapour handling

Guarantees continuous operations even in case of evaporation. Due to their design, the side
channel pumps are the best solutions when an application needs to handle vapour and liquid or if
self priming capabilities are needed.

Low NPSHR values

Cavitation free operation guarantees full operating capacity.

The combined side channel pumps with low NPSH impeller improve the capability to handle liquid
is the worst suction conditions. It also avoids cavitation when the level of liquid at the inlet of the
pump would become critical for other pump types.

This particularity of the pump type CEH is due to the addition of a centrifugal impeller that
pressurized the liquid pumped for a couple of meter and that secure the required NPSH of the first
side channel stage. The UEA pumps can also operate with Low NPSHR values.

Installation with CEH pumps Installation with other pump type

With a positive suction head less than 0.5 m, the installation is relatively simple and costs
are kept low.

Performance curve characteristics

Due to its design, the side channel pumps allowed high pressure at low flow rate.

Shaft sealing and materials

Compliant with the rules for emissions, material according to the current requirements and
standards. Sealing

Low sound level

Quiet pump operation
Auto Gas
Auto gas pump solutions

For auto gas station SIHI can offer thee different solutions:

i Bottom-off loading, tank above surface of the earth,

Requirements for pumps in filling stations:

i Low NPSH
i Handling of vapour
i Handling of vapour / liquid mixtures
i Characteristic curve features
i Stability of characteristics curves
i Mechanical seals and magnetic drive
i Material options

Generally to select a pump two things has to be considered:

Max start pressure during start phase : app: 7 – 9 bar

Filling pressure during filling : app: 4 – 6 bar
Flow rate during filling : 15 to 30 l/min

The filling pressure is depending of the smallest nozzle orifice diameter and car tank construction.
In hot season periods is a short start pressure of 7 to 9 bar required, to calculate the flow rate a lower filling pressure of 4
to 6 bar is to be considered.

Safety regulations, relating to minimum

safe distances, coupled to a physical lack of Auto gas station with
space require the installation of under-ground PC Unit
LPG tanks. Discharge is therefore
only possible via the top flange. The Sterling
PC plant and CEBA tank pump is a top mounted
pump system. The pipe of PC system or only the motor
for the CEBA is located outside of the tank.
The primary benefit being that there is no items
such as electric motor or mechanical seals
within the sealed & pressurised LPG vessel. The CEBA

Rating and aspects of installation:

Pumps can be selected in accordance with the

characteristic curves. Specific data, especially with regard
to the required motor, will be given in our quotation.
When selecting a pump size, it must always be borne
in mind that vapour-free inflow can not always be
guaranteed. In practice, it is always very important to
design an installation in accordance with the state of
the art (e.g. see installation drawing below) in order to
minimize vaporisation and head losses. If not,
some safety factors need to be incorporated in the
determination of the pump design.

Aspects on installation (general):

1. The suction pipes must be configured such that there is a minimum of resistance. There should be no filters etc. which
could impact high frictional loses and hinder the flow to the pump.

2. The minimum liquid tank level must consider flow resistance of the suction pipe the required NPSH of the pump.

3. Bypass pipes from discharge side to inlet or suction side are not allowed. The bypass backflow from the
relief valve must be fed back to the storage tank.

4. If one pump has to fill several tanks with different LPG mixtures at different vapour pressures, efficient non-return
valves or other suitable shut-off devices are required at the discharge side to avoid any service liquid blowing out during
the change-over process.

5. Required differential pressure minimum: 1 – 3 bar if a vapour return line is connected between tanks.
3 - 5 bar if no vapour return line is installed.
More than 5 bar in special cases, high temperature difference, high pipe
resistant etc..

6. If more than one pump are connected with one tank a special header with right dimensions can distribute the
fluid free of vapour.

Generally:

The nominal output rating can be found in the capacity

curve of a filling carrousel for LPG cylinders. This
nominal output rating, with regard to a constant filling
pressure, should be increased by an additional, by-pass
quantity led back to the feeling tank via a pressure
sustaining valve. The additional quantity is normally
from 20 to 50 %, depending on the size of the filling
system. The differential pressure to be generated by the
pump depends on the frictional characteristics (system
curve) of the LPG plant and the flow rate.

Whilst the static head may often be neglected, the flow losses (dynamic head) of the components in the system can be
calculated accurately with the aid of standard tables and empirical values. Uncertainty often arises when calculating the
system head, which in LPG plants results mainly from pressure differences are highly dependent upon temperature
changes. The seasonal temperature changes and thus the change in the pressure differential must also be considered
especially at the discharge side.

The pressure difference can be determined by means of the vapour pressure curve for the media being pumped. The
use of the pressure gradient of the liquefied gas could also been used. This pressure gradient indicates the pressure
change per °C and guarantees a fast and accurate calculation of the differential pressure during the design stage.
However it must be realized that, if extreme factors are taken into consideration, the resultant selection will be an
oversized pump. Thus the high cost of both the pump and the operation under the partial load, will produce an
uneconomic solution and unfavourable operating conditions.

SIHI Pumps LPG Technology CEH-00 / 2005
Operating principle CEH

The CEH pump or so-called centrifugal combined system (combination pump) is suited with a low NPSH centrifugal impeller
before the side channel stages (series connection). This NPSH inducer stage creates enough pressure to overcome the
entrance pressure loss of the first side channel stage or NPSH required.
A side channel stage consist of:
• a suction intermediate piece with the suction port,
• a discharge intermediate piece with the side channel, the air displacement channel at the end of the side channel, the
discharge port and the gas slot,
• a vane wheel impeller enclosed by the two intermediate pieces.

Vane wheel impeller

Discharge intermediate piece

Suction intermediate piece

Impeller

The turning of the vane wheel impeller creates an under pressure at the beginning of the side channel (centrifugal effect) and the
gas or liquid with gas is drawn in. The air displacement channel provokes a positive displacement effect so the gas remaining
at the root of the vane wheel impeller is forced out through the gas slot.
The pressure generating is obtained by the repetitive re-entering of the liquid in the side channel (corkscrew movement).

Corck screw movement of liquid

Side Channel

Discharge intermediate piece

Gas slot Positive displacement effect

A side channel pump can de-aerate and degas the suction line by itself and is thus very suitable for suction lift operation. A side
channel pump can handle large quantities of (entrained) gas. Mixtures up to a gas share of 50% are possible. The ability for self-
priming and the handling of large amounts of (entrained) gas, will guarantee continuous operation even in case of evaporation
and therefore contribute to a higher level of safety in industrial processes.
To avoid cavitation the distance between the liquid level and the entrance at the suction side of the pump is restricted. This
distance is related to the NPSH or Net Positive Suction Head. The NPSH for CEH pumps is very low due to it special construction.
The axial entrance and its larger diameter results in a less disturbed flow and lower friction losses. Together with the low NPSH
of the centrifugal impeller the CEH can handle a positive suction head of less than 0.5 m.
This makes the CEH very suitable for pumping liquids near their boiling point at reasonable economic expenses and the low
NPSH guarantees also full output capacity because of operation without cavitation.

APPLICATION

Vertical, extended tank pump essentially for handling liquids that

are either boiling or stored at their vapour pressure.
Particularly suited to AutoGas filling stations.
One of the primary features of this side-channel type of pump is the
special suction impeller that requires extremely low levels of NPSH.
CEB pumps have been specifically designed for use with Liquefied
Petroleum Gas and other liquefied gases.

DESIGN

Sterling-SIHI side channel units are a low noise design of

combination pump. They are ideal for pumping liquids that are
stored at their boiling point, have a degree of entrained gas, or very
low NPSH conditions. The vertical tank pump has been designed in
order to enable retro-fitting into most common tanks. Moreover, the
dimensions are such that the unit can be used to replace
submersible designs of pump.
Although the pump can be supplied in other lengths, the standard
size is between 1.3 -& 3.0 m.

General comments:
3
Sterling-SIHI offers a variety of conventionally sealed and seal-less pumps for pumping up to 220m /hr LPG from both underground and above-
ground vessels. The product seeks to cover the three main concepts of: Flooded suction, for above ground tanks; Priming, for below ground; and
Submerged, for above and below ground.

For elevated flow rates delivery pressures, again with very favourable NPSH conditions, Sterling SIHI offer an additional range of vertical tank
pumps. This is the CEB 3101 6104 or ZEB 5000 – 6500. Both are available with magnetic coupling

For general industrial applications involving extremely poor suction conditions, or when pumping liquids/gasses at their boiling point, please
consider the CEH and SC 2000 side channel pumps. This is an end-suction construction that is also available with magnetic drive. Furthermore,
when installed with the Sterling-SIHI PC plant, it can be mounted on top of the LPG storage tank. For higher flow rates involving unfavourable
suction conditions, Sterling-SIHI can supply the UEA, MSP units also with magnetic coupling.

Dry running protection (part of. PC plant)

After the pump, the dry running protection device is the
most important component of the system. It is fitted directly PG 16 L iq u ifa n t
into the retaining stage of the pump in order to detect the liquid level FDL 51
inside the pump casing. It not only protects the pump against dry

running but also keeps the pump in a primed condition. The dry running n o e x- zo n e
protection is Ex rated and designed to DN32 PN40

operate in hazardous areas. It is fundamental to the priming and

x If the liquid level in the pump drops below the centre line, when
not running, the unit will be started. This will fully prime the

Pump liquid level controller E&H Liquiphant

Foot valve (option)

Specifically recommended for auto-gas stations where short priming times

are required. The membrane is constructed from a suitable material that is
compatible with LPG. It offers high sealing combined with high resilience.

Switchboard: PC – automatic (option)

Automatic operation is usually required where the pump may stand for
long periods without operating. This can cause the LPG, within the pump,
to evaporate. By monitoring the liquid level, the pump can be
automatically started in order to unsure that it remains in a fully
primed position.

Pump Selection for Car Filling Stations

The criteria for selection of the right pump size are:

x required differential pressure at start-up : 9,0 bar
(The pressure in the fuel tank drops immediately after the filling starts.
However, from a practical perspective it is imperative that the pump
Is capable of generating this differential pressure during start-up.
Evident from the curve, below, this is more than possible in order to
Cater for the most arduous temperature conditions).
x differential pressure during filling : 5,5 bar
x dispenser filling flow rate : 30 l/min per nozzle
only one minute for customer to re-fill a 30 litre tank
x for a dispenser with two nozzles it is 60 l/min : 3,6 m³/h.
x for a dispenser with four nozzles is 120 l/min : 7,2 m³/h.
During filling operation the actual duty point of the PC 3607 and PC 4106 moves to a differential pressure of 5,5 bar and a
dispenser filling flow rate of 4,4m³/h and 8,0 m³/h respectively. i.e. 36,6 l/min and 33,3 l/min per nozzle.

Installations

The Sterling PC unit is very flexible and can meet the requirements of almost all site conditions, practises, and regulations.

SIHI Pumps Systems Pumping Technology LPG PC plants 5/2004

a) Different tank diameters
The standards for LPG tanks vary in from country to country. The PC system therefore is suitable for any capacity up
to a maximum of 200m3. The top mounted PC unit requires only a suction pipe, which can easily be adapted to all tank
diameters. This assumes that the suction lift does not exceed 4 m.

Unlike submersible and

vertical pumps, that can
cause problems when Autogas

changing duty, the PC

system is very straight
forward. There is no need
to change internal barrel
sizes, or tank flanges.
The PC system simply sits
above ground with a
suction pipe connecting to
the tank flange.

b) One pump for two tanks

Another advantage of the top-mounted PC system is that one pump alone can be used to feed from two tanks.
This would not be possible with vertical or submersible pumps. The second tank can be installed at a later time with
increased demand of LPG.

Also in remote areas, the view from top

suction
line
The first tank has to be
installed parallel to the pump
axis. The horizontal part of the
suction line is connected to the
main suction line with a
tank 2
y-piece.

The initial installation costs are

not higher than a single tank.

The advantage of installing a top-mounted PC unit is that it can be used with two tanks with only very small
modifications. The initial costs for a single tank installation are kept low. When extending the system to two tanks the
existing installation remains un-touched. The only additional investment will be in a small amount of pipe work.

This offers massive life-time savings over submersible equipment!

Suction line

x Short suction lines guarantee a short priming times

x Only full bore ball valves should be used
x A sup instead of a filter reduces the hydraulic resistance and evaporation of liquid

“Tandem” mechanical seal supplier system

Operating with quench fluid

(API 610, plan 52)

The PN16 vessel is operating with atmosphere pressure pressurization

is not necessary for dual mechanical seals in tandem arrangement.
The supply fluid (quench) is under atmospheric. Connection of the
vessel via an orifice 1,5 mm, gas is led via orifice to a exhaust pipe or
flare. Requested pipe connection ½”. As quench liquid can be used water
or water with glycol as frost protection.
Liquid “MIN“ filling is controlled by level switch.
As option for reasons of safety a pressure switch should trigger an alarm
as this can indicate a malfunction of the mechanical seal. Thermo siphon
(natural) circulation or forced circulation.

“Back to back” mechanical seal supplier system

Operating with quench fluid

(API 610, plan 53)

The PN30 vessel is loaded with minimum 1-2 bar above max. pump outlet
pressure for dual mechanical seals in back to back arrangement.
The supply fluid (quench) is under pressure. Connection of the vessel
prepared for external N2 quench pre pressure. As quench liquid can be
used water or water with glycol as frost protection. Liquid “MIN“ filling is
controlled by level switch. As option for reasons of safety a pressure switch
should trigger an alarm as this can indicate a malfunction of the mechanical
seal. Thermo siphon (natural) circulation or forced circulation. Filling of
quench fluid with hand pump.
Monitoring of leakage, mechanical seal with throttle bush

EEx pressure switch

In case of shaft seal leakage the pressure will increases in
seal chamber system. Switch point of 0,5 bar can be used
to shut down the pump and close valves. To monitor
tandem mechanical seal and throttle bush execution.

Minimum flow by pass valve
Used if operating pressure is ” 1 bar below max. pressure!

Material: GJ_S 400-18-LT, GGG 40.3, 0.7043

GP 240 GH ,GS C 25 , 1.0619
Pressure: PN 40
Flange: DIN 2501
Temperature: -15°C to 80°C, GJ_S 400-18-LT
-40°C to 80°C, GP 240 GH
Local rules must be considered
Approval: TÜV Nord id. no.0045
Open press: by order, min 1 bar above duty
Counter pressure dependent
Application: Water, carbon dioxine, LPG etc.

This by pass valve is operating counter pressure dependent, which means open pressure is independent of winter or summer times always relating to
pump differential pressure. An installation of a bypass valve is recommended to ensure that the maximum pressure and admissible minimum flow of the
pump is maintained. In order to compensate for the fluctuation in vapour pressure over the seasons this valve is designed as back pressure-regulated
bypass valves. That means, this valve is opening at a set differential pressure of the pump, seasons independent.

Minimum flow by free flow control valve

Used if operating pressure is < 1 bar below max. pressure, minimum flow less than 25 % of operating flow!

In case a by pass valve is not suitable the of admissible minimum flow can be controlled by a free flow control valve. This valve is designed for
automatic control of the required pump minimum flow. The minimum flow should be less than 25 % of max. pump operating flow.
