SIHI LPG Solutions throughout the Supply Chain
During the various stages of distribution, pumps are required to transfer LPG in order to compensate the pressure losses
in the flow process. Under normal atmospheric conditions, liquid gases are gaseous. Depending on the temperature at
certain pressures they can be liquefied.
At present, liquefied gasses are produced and used in many forms. They are mainly gasses that comply with DIN 51622
as propane, butane and their mixtures. In order to use them in industry and private homes they have to be stored,
pumped and transported properly.

The combined side channel pumps with low NPSH impeller improve the capability to handle liquid
is the worst suction conditions. It also avoids cavitation when the level of liquid at the inlet of the
pump would become critical for other pump types.
This particularity of the pump type CEH is due to the addition of a centrifugal impeller that
pressurized the liquid pumped for a couple of meter and that secure the required NPSH of the first
side channel stage. The UEA pumps can also operate with Low NPSHR values.
With a positive suction head less than 0.5 m, the installation is relatively simple and costs
are kept low.

1. The suction pipes must be configured such that there is a minimum of resistance. There should be no filters etc. which
could impact high frictional loses and hinder the flow to the pump.
2. The minimum liquid tank level must consider flow resistance of the suction pipe the required NPSH of the pump.
3. Bypass pipes from discharge side to inlet or suction side are not allowed. The bypass backflow from the
relief valve must be fed back to the storage tank.
4. If one pump has to fill several tanks with different LPG mixtures at different vapour pressures, efficient non-return
valves or other suitable shut-off devices are required at the discharge side to avoid any service liquid blowing out during
the change-over process.
5. Required differential pressure minimum: 1 – 3 bar if a vapour return line is connected between tanks.
3 - 5 bar if no vapour return line is installed.
More than 5 bar in special cases, high temperature difference, high pipe
resistant etc..
6. If more than one pump are connected with one tank a special header with right dimensions can distribute the
fluid free of vapour.
Bottling
Calculation of pump size
Generally:
Whilst the static head may often be neglected, the flow losses (dynamic head) of the components in the system can be
calculated accurately with the aid of standard tables and empirical values. Uncertainty often arises when calculating the
system head, which in LPG plants results mainly from pressure differences are highly dependent upon temperature
changes. The seasonal temperature changes and thus the change in the pressure differential must also be considered
especially at the discharge side.
The pressure difference can be determined by means of the vapour pressure curve for the media being pumped. The
use of the pressure gradient of the liquefied gas could also been used. This pressure gradient indicates the pressure
change per °C and guarantees a fast and accurate calculation of the differential pressure during the design stage.
However it must be realized that, if extreme factors are taken into consideration, the resultant selection will be an
oversized pump. Thus the high cost of both the pump and the operation under the partial load, will produce an
uneconomic solution and unfavourable operating conditions.
Pump selection:
Cylinder : 11,8 kg
Cylinder per hour : 750 1/ h
Density : 0,56 kg/l estimated
Flow : (11,8 kg /0,560 kg/l) 750 1/h = 15.804 l/h = 15,8 m3/h
For carousel is a constant by pass flow of 20 to 50 % recommend to compensate pressure fluctuations and pump wear.
Selected pump:
Q= 19,5 to 23,7m3/h
p= 12 to 15 bar
P= 22 to 25,5 kW
Installation and commissioning of SIHI LPG pumps
Please check:
i Is pump set installed according to SIHI recommendation?
i Is the tank filled with LPG?
i Is the electric connection motor, dry running protection etc. finished?
i Is the discharge side (pump outlet) free connected to consumer or tank etc...?
i Is motor/pump shaft alignment after installation checked?
The pump must be filled with liquid. Open a valve after discharge flange. Gas is blowing out, after a time liquid will come,
close the valve again. All air has been bowed out to ovoid an explosion risk with oxidant during first start.
Before starting the pump check outlet valve. To avoid motor overload a
i CEHA need to be started with full open discharge valve,
i UEA need to be started with throttled outlet valve.
Start the pump. If liquid doesn’t arrive the pump after 30 sec the dry running protection has to stop. It’s anything wrong.
(It’s not allowed more than 45 sec for dry running time otherwise the pump can be damaged).
Check whether the pump is operating the right performance range (performance curve).

The CEH pump or so-called centrifugal combined system (combination pump) is suited with a low NPSH centrifugal impeller
before the side channel stages (series connection). This NPSH inducer stage creates enough pressure to overcome the
entrance pressure loss of the first side channel stage or NPSH required.
A side channel stage consist of:
• a suction intermediate piece with the suction port,
• a discharge intermediate piece with the side channel, the air displacement channel at the end of the side channel, the
discharge port and the gas slot,
• a vane wheel impeller enclosed by the two intermediate pieces.
Impeller
The turning of the vane wheel impeller creates an under pressure at the beginning of the side channel (centrifugal effect) and the
gas or liquid with gas is drawn in. The air displacement channel provokes a positive displacement effect so the gas remaining
at the root of the vane wheel impeller is forced out through the gas slot.
The pressure generating is obtained by the repetitive re-entering of the liquid in the side channel (corkscrew movement).
Side Channel
Gas
A side channel pump can de-aerate and degas the suction line by itself and is thus very suitable for suction lift operation. A side
channel pump can handle large quantities of (entrained) gas. Mixtures up to a gas share of 50% are possible. The ability for self-
priming and the handling of large amounts of (entrained) gas, will guarantee continuous operation even in case of evaporation
and therefore contribute to a higher level of safety in industrial processes.
To avoid cavitation the distance between the liquid level and the entrance at the suction side of the pump is restricted. This
distance is related to the NPSH or Net Positive Suction Head. The NPSH for CEH pumps is very low due to it special construction.
The axial entrance and its larger diameter results in a less disturbed flow and lower friction losses. Together with the low NPSH
of the centrifugal impeller the CEH can handle a positive suction head of less than 0.5 m.
This makes the CEH very suitable for pumping liquids near their boiling point at reasonable economic expenses and the low
NPSH guarantees also full output capacity because of operation without cavitation.

Sterling-SIHI offers a variety of conventionally sealed and seal-less pumps for pumping up to 220m /hr LPG from both underground and above-
ground vessels. The product seeks to cover the three main concepts of: Flooded suction, for above ground tanks; Priming, for below ground; and
Submerged, for above and below ground.
For elevated flow rates delivery pressures, again with very favourable NPSH conditions, Sterling SIHI offer an additional range of vertical tank
pumps. This is the CEB 3101 6104 or ZEB 5000 – 6500. Both are available with magnetic coupling
For general industrial applications involving extremely poor suction conditions, or when pumping liquids/gasses at their boiling point, please
consider the CEH and SC 2000 side channel pumps. This is an end-suction construction that is also available with magnetic drive. Furthermore,
when installed with the Sterling-SIHI PC plant, it can be mounted on top of the LPG storage tank. For higher flow rates involving unfavourable
suction conditions, Sterling-SIHI can supply the UEA, MSP units also with magnetic coupling.
CEHA 5105 Cargo LPG – Truck Pump
Side Channel Pump with special NPSH Impeller with built in hydraulic motor.
TECHNICAL DATA
Automatic operation is usually required where the pump may stand for
long periods without operating. This can cause the LPG, within the pump,
to evaporate. By monitoring the liquid level, the pump can be
automatically started in order to unsure that it remains in a fully
primed position.

Installations
The Sterling PC unit is very flexible and can meet the requirements of almost all site conditions, practises, and regulations.
The advantage of installing a top-mounted PC unit is that it can be used with two tanks with only very small
modifications. The initial costs for a single tank installation are kept low. When extending the system to two tanks the
existing installation remains un-touched. The only additional investment will be in a small amount of pipe work.

Accessories
The PN30 vessel is loaded with minimum 1-2 bar above max. pump outlet
pressure for dual mechanical seals in back to back arrangement.
The supply fluid (quench) is under pressure. Connection of the vessel
prepared for external N2 quench pre pressure. As quench liquid can be
used water or water with glycol as frost protection. Liquid “MIN“ filling is
controlled by level switch. As option for reasons of safety a pressure switch
should trigger an alarm as this can indicate a malfunction of the mechanical
seal. Thermo siphon (natural) circulation or forced circulation. Filling of
quench fluid with hand pump.
Monitoring of leakage, mechanical seal with throttle bush
EEx Liquiphant
In case of no liquid a liquid sensor installed in frond of suction flange
is protecting the pump for dry running damages
Relay circuit: 1 operating contact
Protection : [EEx ib] IIB and IIC
Max. values: U < 250 V AC
I < 4A
P <750VA
cos M > 0,7
Mains connection: 230 V, + 15 % - 10 %,
50/60 Hz
Installation: Mounting into a switch board
This by pass valve is operating counter pressure dependent, which means open pressure is independent of winter or summer times always relating to
pump differential pressure. An installation of a bypass valve is recommended to ensure that the maximum pressure and admissible minimum flow of the
pump is maintained. In order to compensate for the fluctuation in vapour pressure over the seasons this valve is designed as back pressure-regulated
bypass valves. That means, this valve is opening at a set differential pressure of the pump, seasons independent.
In case a by pass valve is not suitable the of admissible minimum flow can be controlled by a free flow control valve. This valve is designed for
automatic control of the required pump minimum flow. The minimum flow should be less than 25 % of max. pump operating flow.
