Proposal Essay 1

1. My audience is professor which represent academic community. Therefore, I need to

use academic writing and formal language to write the essay.

2. Start with a hook then the audience need to know the background of my topic.

3. Although going to college is very expensive, college is still worth the money and time

because the diploma can provide opportunities of better jobs , higher social status and success of

children.

4. The diploma can make people have better job opportunities. Also, it is likely to higher

the social status. Finally, it can increase the success rate of their children.

5. I am going to use the articles “Is College Worth It? Clearly, New Date Say” and “The

Privileges of The parents”

6. “The pay of people with a four-year college degree has risen compared to that of those

with a high school degree but no college credit” (Brummel). This shows that people with a

college degree have higher chance to get a job with a better income. Also, “60.6 percent of

children whose parents have advanced degrees get mostly A’s, whereas only 27.8 percent of

high-school dropouts’ children do” (Miller). This proves that parents with college degree can

make their children have higher chance of getting better grades.

7. I went back to Shanghai last year and met a classmate from middle school. She does

not have a college degree and she only earns about $600 per month because it is very hard for

her to find a better job without a diploma. It is kindly sad for her and I cannot stop imagining that

she will likely to earn more if she has a college degree.

8. In the article “We Send Too Many Students to Colleges”, Nemko argues that there are

many successful people without a college degree such as Bill Gates, Michael Dell and Steve

Wozniak. However, many of those people are either business man or very intelligent. People that

do not want to start a business or lack of knowledge still need to go to colleges whereas colleges

are good place to study.
