time time
Latitude Longitude
3712’30” 12052’30” 05:35:13.84 05:35:27.81
3745’00” 12220’00” 05:35:15.78 05:35:19.80
3758’33” 12143’38” 05:35:08.35 05:35:25.00
It is given that one degree change of latitude and longitude corresponds to 111.0
km and 88.2 km respectively at latitude 3745’00”. Using 3-circle method,
estimate the epicentral location (latitude and longitude) of the above earthquake.

5 (a) A seismograph which is located 1000 km away from an earthquake epicenter,

1
records a maximum ground displacement of 15.5 mm for surface waves 2.5
having a period of about 30 sec. Based on Gutternberg and Richtor (1956)
equation, calculate the surface wave magnitude of the earthquake.

(b) During this earthquake, the depth of the fault rupture is estimated as 15 km
and the length of the surface faulting is determined as 700 km. Using the 2.5
equation of Idriss (1985) for seismic moment and the equations of Hanks and
Kanamori (1979) for moment magnitude, obtain the average slip along the
fault. Use the correlation curve for magnitude given by Idriss (1985) in Fig. 1.

7 Explain the various amplitude parameters to assess the ground motion induced 4
due to earthquake.
