Answer ALL questions
(Assume any data you need further with justification)
_____________________________________________________________________________
1. For a continuous foundation, given: B = 2.0 m; Df = 1 m; γ = 17 kN/m3; eccentricity e =

0.2 m; load inclination α = 200. Estimate the ultimate load Qult by using the following
methods:
a) By using Meyerhof’s method of load eccentricity and inclination
b) By using Reduction factor method of Purkhayastha & Char for load eccentricity and
Meyerhof’s method of load inclination
c) By using Patra et al. (2012) method of (i) Partial compensation case and (ii)
Reinforced case of load combinations (12)

2. A shallow foundation is 1 m wide and 2 m long. Given: Df = 1 m. The soil supporting the
foundation has the following parameters: Φ = 250, c = 50 kN/m2, and γ = 20 kN/m3.
Determine the ultimate vertical load that the foundation can carry by using Meyerhof’s
values of Nc, Nq, and Nγ and the shape and depth factors by Meyerhof. If the ground
water table is present at the base of the foundation then what changes in the ultimate
vertical load will be there? (08)
3. A continuous foundation with B = 2.0 m; Df = 1 m rests over the soil having soil
properties as c = 60 kN/m2, Φ = 200, γ = 16 kN/m3. A rigid rock layer is present at a
depth 0.5 m below the base of the foundation. Estimate the ultimate load Qult for this
case. you may use the graphs as shown below. (10)
