b) Predict the ground water table given the following data: Depth up to which water
is bailed out 18m. Water rise in 1 day = 0.95 m, II day = 0.86 m and III day = 0.78 14 1 L4
m Use the Hvorslev's method for predicting ground water table.

geophone
Time to receive wave (sec.) 0.025 0.05 0.10 0.11 0.12 15 1 L5

Determine the seismic velocity for the surface layer and underlying layer. Also
determine the thickness of upper layer.

Module - 2.
Q3 a) A circular area on the ground surface 6m in diameter carries a uniformly
distributed load of 50kN/m2. Calculate the vertical stress at depths of 3m, 6m, 9m 11 2 L3
and 12m. Also plot the variation of stress with depth

b) A water tank is supported by a ring foundation having outer diameter of 10 m and

inner diameter of 7.5 m. The ring foundation transmits a load intensity of 160
kN/m2. Compute the vertical stress induces at a depth of. 4 m. below the centre 14 2 L4
of ring foundation using Boussinesqs analysis.

OR
Q4 a) Two columns M and N 6m apart, load on column M is 400kN and on column N
is 300kN. The load can be considered as point loads. Calculate the vertical 10 2 L4
stresses in the soil 3m below the foundation vertically below M and N.

A circular footing 2m diameter resting on the ground surface transfers a contact

b)
pressure of 150kPa. Sub soil consists of fine sand of 6m deep underlain by 4m
thick clay. The ground water table is I m below ground level. Unit weight of fine
