Instruction: Solve the following problem and show your detailed solution.

1. Match students with their major. Michael, Clarissa, Reggie, and Ellen are attending
University of the Immaculate Conception (UIC). One student is a computer science
major, one is Chemistry major, one is a MLS major, and one is a Pharmacy major. From
the following clues, determine which major each student is pursuing.
a. Michael and the computer science major are next-door neighbors.
b. Clarissa and the chemistry major have attended UIC for 2 years.
Reggie has attended UIC for 3 years, and the pharmacy major has attended UIC
for 4 years.
c. Ellen has attended UIC for fewer years than Michael.
d. The MLS major has attended UIC for 2 years.

3. Use inductive reasoning to predict the next number. Explain the pattern generated by
your answer.

a. 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11

2 2 2

- The difference between 3 and 1 is 2. Similarly, the difference between 7 and 5 is two as
well. It explains that the difference between the succeeding numbers from its preceding
is always 2. Therefore, the following number is 11 because when you add two from 9,
the result will be 11.

b. 12, 5, 10, 3, 8

-7 5 -7 5

- The difference between 5 and 12 is -7. On the other hand, the difference between 10
and 5 is 5. Consequently, the difference between 3 and 10 is -7 once again. It shows
that the sequence of its difference was -7 and 5 recurrently. Therefore, the following
number is eight because when you add five from 3, the result will be 8.

4. Following the pattern shown in the number sequence below, what is the missing
number?

1 8 27 64 125 216

Explanation:

Therefore, the missing number is 64.
