NAGARKOT DAY HIKE

Board the waiting vehicle for the 40 minutes drive to Changunarayan –

commencing point of our day's hike. Before starting we can visit the
Changunarayan Temple. Changunarayan (also called Dolagiri) stands on a hill
roughly 22 kilometers from Kathmandu and four kilometers north of Bhaktapur.
This temple is said to be the oldest in the Kathmandu Valley. The temple was
built at the beginning of the 18th century. Located on the west side are bronze
portraits of the founder, Queen Riddhilakshmi, with her young son Bhupalendra
Malla (1687-1700). This magnificent temple is the repository of precious
treasures of Nepalese sculptures.

After the darshan, start hiking along the Telkot ridge with views of the Bhaktapur
city, “city of devotees”, on our right. Bhaktapur looks like a conch shell from
above. Towards our left we could see several villages with views of the Shivapuri
hills. Just above the hills we caught the first glimpse of the magnificent ranges-
Lantang (7246 m) and Gauri Shaker (7134 m) were amongst the few mountains
we could see.

After 45 minutes of walk along the ridge lined with pine trees, we drop down
about 40 meters to junction the main road coming from Bhaktapur. We crossed
the road and resumed climbing the ridges, now hiking towards the temple of
Goddess Kali (also locally known as Jalpa Devi’s Mandir) situated at Telkot
village. We climb the cemented steps for about twenty minutes to reach the
temple where we can stop and rest for some time.

After stretching our muscles, we energize ourselves for the uphill climb, this time
the route with a narrow path. We reach the top of the hill after 15 minutes where
the path widens. As we trudged along, yet again we can view the Bhaktapur and
Kathmandu valleys below us, with the snow capped mountains in front. Nestled
in the laps of the snowy mountains the two cities looks serene and beautiful,
Look further above and we can see the approaching village of Nagarkot. Cross
the main road coming from Nagarkot, diverting now towards the narrow tracks,
which lead us to a small village called Peepal village. There is a Peepal tree and
a small monastery at the beginning of this village, so we see where it gets it's
name from. As one passes through the village, we can live and experience the
vibrant Nepali culture in all its richness. This village consist of mixed groups of
people like the Newar’s, Tamang’s, Chettri’s, Brahmin’s which is endemic to the
Kathmandu valley.

At the end of the village there is short decent leading towards a small stream.
One has to be careful, for the path is narrow, and, if raining, can be slippery.
Cross the stream and meandered along the terraced fields of paddy and mustard
till we reached Gairi Gau (village). From here start to ascend once again passing
through Newa Tol, yet another village, until we reached the local police station.
Once through this station, we reached the crest of the mountaintop, finally
arriving at Nagarkot! (From the stream it takes about half an hour to reach
Nagarkot.)
From Nagarkot (2,174 meters) we captured picturesque scenes of Mt. Everest
(8850 m), Mt. Manaslu (8563 m), Ganesh Himal (7111m), Choba Bhamre (6010
m) and other parts of the eastern Himalayan range. Standing between
Kathmandu Valley in the west and the snow-fed Indravati River in the east, the
scenery in this beautiful spot was exclusive, indescribable with a bracing climate.

Spend some time in Nagarkot and after lunch board the vehicle and drive back to
Kathmandu.
