Uncle Tom
Uncle Tom was the martyr of the novel, representing all that was good and ultimately sacrificing freedom
and life. He was a strong Christian and a kind and determined man.
Eliza Harris
Eliza was one of the strong, intelligent Christian mothers that were so important throughout the novel.
She was raised in the Shelby household with her son and a husband belonging to another owner. She
escapes to freedom with her son and is separated from her husband.
George Harris
Eliza’s husband was intelligent, strong, and determined. He was bold in his decision to escape for Canada
and wanted nothing more than to make a life for his family, rather than continue to allow them and
himself to be degraded by their owners.
This was the child of Augustine and Marie St. Clare, known most for being an angelic and kind girl. Eva
was yet another devout Christian who loved Uncle Tom and his fellow slaves.
He was kind to his slaves but selfish and unhappy. Rather than do what he knew was right, he lost himself
in alcohol and similar vices.
Simon Legree
Legree represented the worst of the worst after St. Clare’s death led to him buying Tom. He was sadistic
and evil, unrelenting in his “punishment” of Tom for his strong and dignified demeanor. He wanted to
break his slaves and almost always did.
